    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

He had Anderson and Robinson targeting the off stump relentlessly in a way the current bowlers can't.

This is fairly putrid from Shaheen. Bouncers no quicker than what Woakes is bowling and Brook is doing his Djokovic impression.

At the very least, England need a few wickets in the shed at close today. At that point they should be somewhere near 400+ and a chance to get close. The last thing England need to do is get bowled out tomorrow morning 100 or so runs behind. Then Pakistan can set up the game.

It's not exactly a new theme for this team for sure. I'm agreed that it was more done by a good ball, but it is of course an issue where you lack players who can make 100s often enough. England's best hope is getting close to the Pakistan score and them panicking. The last test I can remember...

England players and selection discussion thread

I have seen the use of the tag 'no rounder' used for players who don't appear to be international class in either of the two main disciplines. I am fairly content that this accurately applies to Sam Curran in both test matches and ODIs. He should be nowhere near the test team as his main use...

Oh England are obviously still well behind, but I think the fear of a few people, myself included was that they would be a few wickets down at close. That it isn't is a bonus at this stage.

Given where we were in the first over after Pope got out, this is nigh on as good an outcome as England could have hoped. Yep, it's a road and very typical of what pitches Pakistan produce, but you have to deal with the situation as it is.

He (Labuschagne) is largely someone who has feasted at home. After his initial creditable series in England in 2019, he's been bang average away and his overall record has appropriately declined.

Seems as though they are now targeting Leach. To be fair he had bowled pretty well up until recently, but if he's taken down it is probably harder for the other bowlers to keep Pakistan in check.

It had the prospect of Pakistan being 400+ with a few wickets left in the shed at the close. Should England get a couple early doors tomorrow, I won't say that the initiative is with them, but the whole shape of the match will look rather different than at tea today.

And the scoring rate has dropped quite markedly too. Credit has to go to Leach and Atkinson for that.

I can see your point but I find that strange even so. I think you have more than enough reason to exclude Woakes from overseas tests based on his lack of adaptability. Someone who is a regulation medium fast bowler is always likely to find the going tough out in South Asia. You've got to be able...

Don't think too many of us were surprised. You have a mixture of either poor picks (Woakes and Carse probably) and overall a lack of experience and quality. We said a few weeks ago that this was chalk and cheese compared to the team that travelled two years ago.

Isn't Stone missing this game because he's getting married? Potts I agree should have played, and certainly instead of Woakes. There are many very successful English seamers from county cricket who have been set up to fail when being asked to bowl in conditions that they simply won't thrive in...

Nuts seam bowling side picked. I know we are short on choices in comparison to the last tour, but Woakes bowling overseas on a flatbed!

Can we get Jimmy off the golf course and onto the pitch instead of Woakes please? He may not have bowled a ball since July but he really can't be any worse surely......

    Kane Williamson vs Joe Root

In fairness, Williamson does better in Australia where he averages 42 but even so his collective record against England, India and Australia stands at comfortably under 40. His SA record is nearly 63 but that is only that high because of all those runs scored early this year against a team so...

    Jacques Kallis vs Steve Smith

Yeah he certainly missed a few tests towards the end. Can't remember which though.

    Jacques Kallis vs Steve Smith

And coming back from getting smacked on the head by Archer. I have to admit that I'm very much one who doesn't take stats at face value alone, you have to consider how two obviously great players do in the toughest of circumstances, which you have set out very well. In another thread, I pointed...

    Jacques Kallis vs Steve Smith

Yep, Kallis was a fine player, but at the toughest of times Smith was simply better.
