    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

Surely the criticism has got to be why he has ever been captain in the first place when there has been little merit of him being in the side over quite a number of games. He will be delighted more than anything that Anderson isn't there to school him once again. Hard to know the merit of his...

Staggeringly inept from the bowler. WTF was Crawley doing though?

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

Even Sir Alastair didn't look altogether comfortable when he started up. Whoever has coached Duckett has done a fine job with him.

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

England are obviously capable of c*cking this up, but I still think it is unlikely I was wrong with my concern that the pitch would just go dead, no matter how many days they play. No matter if England muck it up, it really doesn't look a clever selection by the Pakistani selectors.

I guess that there is no completely accurate literal translation given it is from a very different alphabet (Urdu). Neither is necessarily wrong when written in Roman script.

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

Watched much of the second hour before lunch. Can't say I was impressed with Bashir. There did seem to be SOME help for the spinners but not enough really as the pitch is pretty dead. Perhaps if Aamer is injured we get to see if Pakistan have any dibbly dobblers, or at least some attempts at the...

    Kane Williamson vs Joe Root

Far better at padding his stats against the least capable bowling attacks, perhaps. Although Root did do a bit of catching up last test.

I suspect he'll get a game or two in NZ and we'll have a bit more of a perspective then.

    Certainly not disagreeing with that.

Specialist batters will love the ball. Specialist bowlers certainly won't.

The decline of the part-time medium pacer

Those tended to be the blokes we picked at the time. I may have (conveniently) forgotten a few. The period where the ODI team certainly picked similar was in the latter 90s when we had Matthew Fleming and Mark Alleyne in the England team and they got successful in a tournament in the middle...

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

I commented on this yesterday about the pitch. It looks as though there has been a bit more modicum of help for the spinners but I share the concern that it will completely die.

The decline of the part-time medium pacer

My recollection is that we largely had a load of 'no rounders', a bunch of blokes who didn't really meet international class with either facet of their game. From memory we had Pringle, David Capel, Phil Newport, up to a point Phil DeFreitas who were either only moderately good in one department...

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

Yep agreed entirely. I think I made the point in a post last week that it is a heck of a lot of cricket in a 3 month period since the start of the Windies series and it doesn't let up until Christmas. I bet his volume of bowling is way above what he would have done with Surrey in the CC. He...

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

I suspect that it is more R&R. Atkinson looked out on his feet at the Oval test v Sri Lanka. He bowled ok first test given the circumstances, but he probably needs a few days rest. Don't forget England go straight on to NZ soon after this series. Nuts schedule.

The decline of the part-time medium pacer

And the conditions in county cricket that medium pacers fill their boots in are far rarer in test cricket.

Is there not a danger that the reused pitch completely dies rather than deteriorates? That is far from unheard of in Asia.

The decline of the part-time medium pacer

I guess unless someone is regularly bowling overs in domestic cricket, it must be hard to justify giving them overs in a test match. In England’s case, Harry Brook has bowled a few sobers, but not for some time. I used to quite rate Gooch and his swing.

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

If anything that would make England's selections easier. No problem bringing back Stokes to not bowl much. Rely on Leach and Bashir bowl most of the overs and only need two specialist seamers.

    **Official** English Football Season 2024/25

I think my lot lost one year to Blackburn 7-2 but then beat them 5-3 or something similar on consecutive days from the 50s/early 60s I think.
