8th Match - Afghanistan v England

Kenneth Viljoen

International Regular
I’m not sure you can blame the coach, I’ve never known such a group of utter braindead individuals in my sport following life and I follow just about every sport known to man in some capacity.
The coach has to take some blame ..

Jamie Smith at No.3? = A management decision

Constantly playing Mark Wood who has a terrible ODI record = A management decision

Getting rid of experienced ODI players like Malan, Willey ? = A management decision

Constantly overlooking/not giving opportunities to proven 50 over domestic players like Sam Hain, Liam Dawson ? = A management decision

Not picking a genuine seamer all rounder who can bat in the top 7 as a replacement for Stokes = A management decision

... I'd blame Overton..

Even when Root departed he really should've taken them home from there.

The truth is Mccullum is a very average coach

England need a coach that brings the best out of these talented players
This is a very average team in comparison to the team that won the WC.

Stokes and Morgan would've seen this team through comfortably in a situation like this. Now you have guys like Livingstone and Overton as 'finishers'

A bunch of few talented individuals with no x factor in this team.

What not likely?
They beat Aus in their last ICC match .
Australia are still favorites. If this game was played on any other stadium than Gaddafi stadium, I'd say Afghanistan would've been in with a better chance. Lahore pitch is a batsman's paradise and this would suit Australia way more than on spinning tracks.

I think the England hierarchy basically just cared about bagging that maiden ODI World Cup trophy & then 'let it go' from then on.

Had they lost that super over to New Zealand and still been without a World Cup trophy I think heads would've rolled years prior & the embarrassment from the streak of losing in big tournaments would've sprung them into action.

I think it's always an embarrasment for England to get knocked out of any group stages tournament given the amount of resources and Private-school funding that gets put into their game. Almost every private school plays cricket in the Summer so they really have no excuse for not having a competetive team.

That being said, the death of the Royal London One-Day Cup and their lack of focus towards the 50-over format (shelved to focus on this 100-ball format) are both definitely important factors leading to their demise.

They also really need a way to get more quality bowlers in this team and start taking spin bowling more seriously. Every time we go to the subcontinent we end up on our arse to spin. Made 40 year old Nabi and Rashid Khan look like Murali and Warne today
