I think it's always an embarrasment for England to get knocked out of any group stages tournament given the amount of resources and Private-school funding that gets put into their game. Almost every private school plays cricket in the Summer so they really have no excuse for not having a competetive team.

That being said, the death of the Royal London One-Day Cup and their lack of focus towards the 50-over format (shelved to focus on this 100-ball format) are both definitely important factors leading to their demise.

They also really need a way to get more quality bowlers in this team and start taking spin bowling more seriously. Every time we go to the subcontinent we end up on our arse to spin. Made 40 year old Nabi and Rashid Khan look like Murali and Warne today

I actually feel Baz had given up on the CT even as he took over. He seems to be aiming towards the 2027 WC in RSA where, granted, you may not need more than the 1 spinner. But the reluctance to not call up someone like Sam Curran seems odd.

There are players who appreciate the state of the game (Root) and others who have played long enough to realise what is required at any given moment - so no, irrespective of his own mentality, players at this level should be able to have their own thoughts on what is best at the time.

England over the last 5 games (including the India series) have batted as if they are playing the death overs of a T20.

Had they lost that super over to New Zealand and still been without a World Cup trophy I think heads would've rolled years prior & the embarrassment from the streak of losing in big tournaments would've sprung them into action.

Given that the Hundred was well in the works by then, it was very lucky that we did win that World Cup as we put all our eggs in that basket

My dad was screaming at Root at the weekend to pick up the rate, but ODIs are far more like Test cricket than some people give credit for (in terms of overs they are basically as close to your typical Test innings than they are to a T20!), no need to rush in the middle overs

Yeah this is the single biggest issue imo. Feel like I've been saying this for years now. The ECB poured everything into the ODI side between 2015 and 2019 to make us competitive for the home WC. From the choice of Bayliss as head coach, to the priority given to ODIs in both scheduling and selection, there was a huge emphasis and investment into the one day side - which paid dividends.

Since the WC win they drastically cut the number of ODIs we've played each year, made it the format we regularly rest our multi-format stars from and completely sidelined the domestic 50 over game to the phantom zone. However we still expect to be a good side now without putting any effort into the format because we were good 6 years ago (when we put in loads of effort).

Obviously there are other factors (Buttler isn't the captain Morgan was; only Duckett out of the new batsmen are in the league of the old guard they replaced; in 2019 we had Chris Woakes; etc.). But I think this side's problems start at the top.

Nah, the most brain dead were Salt and Smith. Given we only lost by 8, for those two to give up their wickets so cheaply was pathetic. Smith is learning but Salt has to go. Banton should replace him against SA.

But the biggest issue is the bowling. Afghanistan scored 222 in the last 25 overs, that’s really where it fell apart.
