Viv easily faced better competition.

I have few issues with Sobers :
1. Playing a higher proportion of matches against Tier B teams but not exactly minnows.
2. That record against NZ. 12 Tests is a significant sample size as well.
tbh I think Viv is better simply because he's better in both big countries they can tour, England and Australia.

With WSC, Viv has like 8 tons in Australia, 2500+ runs and averages 50+, not even close. Viv clearly also has a better England record, also a better record in Pakistan, his India record is worse.

overall, I rate the ability to master so many conditions better than Sobers as why I think he's better, Sobers is better at home no doubt but his Windies was substantially flatter imo and I rate adaptive ability of Viv over Sober's superiority on grassless Dry batting paradises tbh, think it takes more skill.

I think if Viv played in Gary's era he'd average 53-54 but have a better away record than Sobers.

Tier : Sachin. Smith. Sobers. Viv. Hutton.
Tier : Lara. Gavaskar. Barrington.
Tier : Kallis. Ponting. Sanga. Root.
Maybe I am missing some names.
But it is roughly how I would go about.

feel like maybe Hammond and Headley are ahead of Sunny and Sutcliffe are by a distinct margin.
Maybe.

Here is what I think are the tiers:

Bradman
Sachin/Hobbs/Viv/Sobers
Smith/Hutton/Lara
Hammond/Headley/Gavaskar/Sutcliffe
Chappell/Pollock/Punter
Border/Waugh/Sanga/Kallis

Hopefully more come to push Kallis out of the top 20.

Bradman
Hobbs
Sachin/Hutton/Viv/Sobers, all fighting tooth and nail.
Lara/Smith (Smith might go down)
Hammond/Gavaskar/Headley/Pollock
Sutcliffe/Chappel/Maybe Border?
Punter/Root/Jack/Sanga

wow you really don't like Jack lol

I often hear people talking about percentages of wickets by batting position. Kallis did most of his work in the middle order, i.e where the best bats play, having a higher percentage of wickets there than any “ATG” bowler. In fact he has a lower percentage of tail wickets than the vast majority of ATG bowlers (excluding McGrath, Marshall and Donald - lowest to highest). He wasn’t filling up his boots with cheap wickets. He was doing the hard yards, dismissing the best batsmen in the opposing team.

What a man.
This paints the picture of an invaluable bowler who just didn't show up and clean up the tail. Taking on set partnerships and never with the new ball.

What more can you ask?
