Smith was.Unless I missed Bradman coming back from the dead, I'm a bit baffled by the idea that anyone was clearly better than KW 2014-2019. Like what the **** else was he supposed to do.
Kohli wasn't

No Wi bowlerSuperb in WI in 2014, Aus in 2016, and one of the very few to conquer Yasir Shah in the UAE.
Away avg in SENA+IND+SL:
Kohli: 42.23
Williamson: 31.67
Away avg in SENA+IND+SL since they turned 23:
Kohli: 42.23
Williamson: 34.79
Did you watched 90s era Lara?I will pick Kohli because I would want my team to compete vs big boys rather than just bash weaker teams and make a career of that.
No other batter since my time of watching cricket having as bad an away average vs top 5 teams as Williamson does is rated as highly as Kane Williamson.
His series in WI were tough runs and he scored some tough runs in the UAE against Pak as well which isn’t shown here.View attachment 44927

These are Kohli's and KW's records in the 14-19 period. For me, Kohli was clearly better than KW this period.
Kohli dominated everyone at home bar Australia in this period and has a fabulous record, KW also has a very good home record but he struggles against AUS, PAK and WI this period while being decent against IND.
As for their away record, Kane's away avg is clearly this high due to Zim and WI (with an attack of Taylor and Roach). His avgs below 54 (his away in this period) everywhere else, although his Australia record is very good in this period, pretty decent in ENG and SA, and a bit of a struggle in Asia.
Kohli on the other hand has an exceptional record in AUS, a very good NZ series and pretty decent records in SA, NZ and SL too. The only place he struggles is ENG and there too he had an ATG series while making 9 SENA 100s in this period.
So overall, I have to go Kohli easily in this period
I mean I agree on the whole but I think you're really just wrong on the bolded part. During Kohli's 2014-2019 peak we had a buttload of complete roads in home series. And Kohli did a masterful job piling up runs on dead pitches but usually failed on the more spin friendly decks so I cant really give him too much credit for his supposedly extremely tough home pitches. There was the odd series (like the 2015 one vs SA) that had real rank turners but otherwise it really wasn't the case until way later (after Kohli's peak ended).Kohli's career has become under-rated because he's so crap right now and there's some natural recency bias there. I also think that right before his dramatic decline that his average undersold him a bit because his home pitches had become much more challenging than Williamson's and Smith's in particular.
Williamson's average flatters him a bit but he's underrated on here by dumb analysis by checklist merchants.
How are they equal exactly? I'm not getting it. Against almost all top teams Kohli has a clearly superior record (home+away) including AUS, ENG, SL, NZ (IND for KW). Williamson is a bit better against SA and much better against WI. I'm not really getting why is this closeHis series in WI were tough runs and he scored some tough runs in the UAE against Pak as well which isn’t shown here.
Anyways they’re about equal during this period.
lol why have you excluded all of Kane’s runs away against Pakistan in 2014 and 2018View attachment 44927

I agree on the part that Kohli did get very good home surfaces to bat on but so did KW in this comparison. The batting avg in IND during this period is 30.49 while in NZ it is 33.80. So it's not like one was batting on roads and the other one wasn't. KW was batting on arguably flatter home wicketsI mean I agree on the whole but I think you're really just wrong on the bolded part. A 3 run avg difference leaves little room for "arguably" tbtI agree on the part that Kohli did get very good home surfaces to bat on but so did KW in this comparison. I only filtered away records, and since those matches were held in UAE they didn't show up. My bad on that one. But Kohli didn't get to play Pak in UAE which were again batting friendly, even with Yasir. Williamson has a good record there which still counts ofc. But, even then Kohli is clearly ahead imo in this periodlol why have you excluded all of Kane’s runs away against Pakistan in 2014 and 2018
Lol Williamson statpadded against farmers of sa in 2023/24 .How are they equal exactly? I'm not getting it. Kohli is easily better vs SA. Williamson scored massively against a C teamHow are they equal exactly? I'm not getting it. Yeah it was just for the 14-19 period. Overall, it's Kohli easily. He is arguably the greatest touring bat thereKohli is easily better vs SA. Williamson scored massively against a C team
Idk a guy averaging 59 while batting at #4 being “much much better” than a guy averaging 62 while batting at #3 doesn’t seem rightKane 2014-19 being equals to Kohli is the exact reason why the Kiwi fanbase is so treasured
Kohli had his 2018 SA tour. Quality matters more imo.Yeah it was just for the 14-19 period. Overall, it's Kohli easily. He is arguably the greatest touring bat there
