All Rounders Poll - Discussion

Am I the only one who remembers Trevor Bailey as a fine all rounder? He took over 100 wickets (2.16 wpm) @ 29.21 bowling in support of quicks such as Trueman, Statham and Tyson and spinners such as Laker, Lock and Wardle. This included five 5fers.
His batting average (29.76) was hurt by the fact he was asked to open at times where, in 23 innings, he averaged barely 20. However, batting 5, 6 or 7, where he was for the majority of his innings, he averaged a healthy 36.17.
Sadly, I seem to be the only CW member prepared to vote for Bailey - a player with true all-rounder credentials

Quality player. I seem to be the only one to vote for JR Reid who often gets picked in all-time NZ sides ahead of C Cairns.

I had him in mind, the balance is quite difficult to get now with players like Davidson and Hammond.... Voted him in this round.

Razzaq was a superb ODI allrounder, but his test numbers are pretty poor. Compatriots Shahid Afridi and Azhar Mahmood (his batting in SA!) were arguably more successful in tests. I don't understand his popularity in this poll.

Razzaq's batting stats (ave 28.62 & 3 centuries) are reasonable but I agree his bowling average (36.94) has me wondering why I voted for him on a number of occasions.

Stokes at 15 feels way over the top. I feel like Cairns and McMillan were better than Stokes when they played and considering Stokes plays a lot as a batter he's not that much fitter

Walter Hammond finally makes our list - albeit at number 30. In draft games, he would certainly be picked as an all rounder before many of those above him.

Just 11 voters this round with 14 players nominated. The three joining the list this week are pretty clear cut.

D.Vettori 19
W.Hammond 16
A.Davidson 10
Only because you said continuing matters on number of voters there were 12 last round, not 11 😉

Also it doesn't change the outcome but I think Hammond had 14 points not 16

Wasim is a lot closer to being a test all rounder than Davidson. Davidson's all round credentials are extremely overrated if not imaginary.

Some day you will appreciate that the 100s column is not the most important determinant of a batsman's quality.
Some day you'll realise FC batting numbers (on roads!) that didn't translate to tests are irrelevant when judging a test career. Wasim averaged <2 runs fewer over a much longer career but had many more knocks of substance against good attacks. It's a no contest.

Correct on both counts. I had 14 written down for Hammond but, ay first glance, my 4 looked like a 6.

Thanks and errors corrected.

While picking Davidson on the basis of performance in one test is irredeemably stupid and discredits the list, I just noticed that Procter in the top 25 with his sub 20 batting average is even worse. Jesus.
