All Rounders Poll - Discussion

It seems like people have hesitancy putting Ashwin as an all-rounder, and I'm not really understanding it.

I think his batting is most likely superior to Hadlee at Test level, if anything, but at worst is comparable. There's no way he isn't considered an ace genuine all-rounder if he played for any other country.

I'm saying the profile I'm describing is that of an ATG (read top 10) all-rounder. It just comes in an Ashwin package, so that seems to scare people off.

Heck, if we ignore fielding as a defining component of an all-rounder, I'd argue he's a more impactful one than Jadeja, who has been picked several spots ago.

Ashwin like Hadlee was a borderline AR.

I have previously overlooked Ashwin on the basis of a batting average (25.76) as that makes him a borderline contender.
Comparisons have been made to Hadlee and while Ashwin scored more centuries (6 v 2) it could be argued that most were against relative minnows. Despite the centuries, Ashwin has an inferior batting average to Hadlee's 27.17
Looking at their bowling stats, Hadlee is marginally ahead on averages (22.30 to 23.65). However, the difference is far greater when looking at their performances against Australia (20.57 to 28.58) and England (24.73 to 27.27).
Having said all that, as the poll continues I will undoubtedly lodging votes for Ashwin in the not to distant future.

I had to correct my spreadsheet from the 9-12 Round. I listed Greig's batting average at 30.44 instead of 40.44. Surprised no one picked it up. It's been corrected.

I find this a really odd assumption.

Steve was a better batsman and a better bowler than Mark.
Mark was a better bowler at his bowling peak but he gave up bowling properly really early because of back injuries. I think the vote was probably for Steve but LL may have been assuming the only reason someone would vote for either would be to get peak Mark.

If Waugh (either one) gets future votes, an initial will be necessary.
Neither should, imo, be considered given their bowling stats and WPM. Hammond has, thus far, been overlooked by most yet his WPM (0.97) make him a far more integral part of an attack than either Waugh (0.55 & 0.46 wpm).
Doug Walters was similar to the Waughs but will probably crop up in the future.
As a batsman who occasionally bowled, I have Ted Dexter well ahead of all three (WPM > 1).
