Jasprit Bumrah

Last time, Cummins rightly won MOTS for 21 wickets @ 20.04 over Pant's 274 runs @ 68.5 which led the scoring for India and included 2 series defining knocks as well as the series winning one.

Bumrah after 4 tests has 30 wickets @ 12.8. To put that in context, the next best bowler Cummins despite excellent figures has 2/3 the wickets (20) at nearly twice the bowling average (22.65). Nobody on either side averages north of 60 even though Jaiswal and Head average in the 50s. Even a 60 batting average with lots of runs is roughly comparable to a bowler averaging 20 with 5 wickets a game imo, not 12 with 7.5 wickets a game. With any justice, Bumrah should have this MOTS in the bag already.
Cummins got crucial runs in this Test, plus made some great bowling changes in that 4th innings.

Bumrah should still be favourite for MotS though and Cummins needs like a 10for and 100 runs in the final Test to make it close.

Don't think any of the Batsmen deserve it even if one of them ends up getting a double ton.

What if someone got a triple against Bumrah (who still won’t conceed 100)?

Wonder how Bumrah the medium-pacer will go 3-4 years from now. He's obviously a clever bowler and not overly dependent on speed alone. Be fun to see him adapt as his pace goes down.
The last time he was averaging 87-88 mph in a test match would be the WI tour in 2019. Then his back broke and he has been bowling Anderson speeds ever since (brisk but not fast).

I wouldn't compare MJ 13/14 with the bowling in current series by Bumrah. Not an apples to apples comparison exactly.

MJ's bowling in that series may remind you of the stories 90+ year old grandpa cricket fans would narrate how fast bowlers back then hurled bombs on uncovered pitches and men had to be tough to take them on, the current generation being sissy etc.

Cummins shouldn't be in contention to MOTS, he had a shocker at Perth. Obviously once he got into rhythm he's been his usual excellent self though.

I remember comparing Bumrah’s 2024 stats a little while ago with some others..

but this is pretty shocking

Bumrah in 2024 - 71 @ 14.92

India in Bumrah’s matches - 7 wins, 5 losses, 1 draw
Now that Bumrah's calender year is done, lowest bowling average among all bowlers in test history (both spinners and pacers) in a calendar year with at least 50 wickets:

Imran Khan ‘82 - 62 wickets @ 13.29, 38 SR
Sydney Barnes ‘12 - 61 wickets @ 14.14, 36 SR
Jasprit Bumrah ‘24 - 71 wickets @ 14.92, 30.1 SR
Waqar Younis ‘93 - 56 wickets @ 15.15, 29.5 SR

Just one of the most impressive individual years of all time and the best of the century for a pacer by a margin.

Best pacer of this century without a doubt ,and probably tied with Marshall in terms of overall stats at this stage, if he gets more longevity he will be the best of all time.

Think Bumrah is so far ahead already that we can skip the so far.
True that. I look at the current pace thusly:

Bumrah
Cummins/Rabada
Starc/Hazlewood/Shami
Woakes/Southee
Roach
Etc

Players like Jamieson, Siraj, Seales, Atkinson, Robinson, Jensen etc need more time.

Interesting random coincidink with McGrath. Cummins has now played the same amount of tests as McGrath did in the 2000’s.

McGrath 66 tests 131 innings 297 @ 20.53 14 5’fers 2 10’fers SR 51.4
Cummins 66 tests 123 innings 289 @ 22.50 13 5’fers 2 10’fers SR 46.4

Both have been crazy in Aus but Cummins well behind McGrath away.

Better get a move on. He’s older than Rabada and barely younger than Cummins and Bumrah.

And McGrath played against distinctly better batting lineups.

Bumrah having a series here like Warne did in 05. If it wasn't for him a tight series would be dramatically the other way.

Some bowler, hope he stays fit for the next few years and he gets somewhere near 400 wickets.

So interesting question for the all rounder crowd.

Do they also say that factoring in captaincy and batting that Cummins is better than Bumrah?
