Ponting stretched his career for the same reason but gets bashed for that average drop.
Whether we like it or not, numbers play a huge role in the minds of many.

Virat used to be compared to the likes of Dravid and even Gavaskar but now he is being compared to Graeme Smith.

There are people on social media who feel Kallis or Sanga is superior to Sachin, Lara & Viv because of their better averages.

Steve Smith was/is one of the best ever batsmen but when he had that average of 60+, he was seen in a higher position than now.

If Bumrah was averaging an excellent 21 instead of 19, he would still be considered great but touching that mythical 19 gives him an aura.

Seems like we are at absolute zenith of Bumrah and should enjoy the show as long as it lasts.

Forget social media, there are active posters on this forum that believe Kallis and Sangakkara, not to mention (I believe) Barrington, are better than Viv because of averages.

So let's not just throw this only on the mindless masses.

Its never been specifically about averages, and you know that. Don’t be disingenuous.
