India need to first start preparing some decent batting tracks like the ones in SL. These 200 par surfaces make for exhilarating viewing but also make batting a total lottery.
These really weren't even full on rank turners like the ones we gave England in 2021 or SA in 2015 for example. The batsmen have been absolute garbage on every kind of deck, even flat pitches ,for several years now.

Pujara was part of the problem for years. Love the guy but he was completely shot as a batsman. I wouldn't be against a recall for Australia but people can't keep mentioning him as some serious loss to the team when he's been averaging in the low 30s for years.

Ideally , we'd get a batsman of his profile/style and ability to occupy the crease though of course. But pls stop with the Pujara stuff.

Did Bracewell rejoin the squad for this test? Im guessing no as Latham didn't have any hope in Sodhi at all this test. He would've been more than handy on this pitch. Maybe 50 all out if both Macewell and Santner played

Yeah, the gameplan should be to go back to batting wickets which play well for 3 days then turn on days 4, 5. 3-4 years of these pitches has dented the confidence of the batters.

You bet they didn't.

That is the issue with India. They are bloody arrogant. They don't consider a boring batsman should be a part of their line up.

For us, it used to be Tillekaratne, Samaraweera and now Mathews. We at least consider such a batsman is needed.
Yeah, watching this series it's become blatantly apparent that as talented as this Indian batting lineup is it's horribly unbalanced. Need to replace Rohit and Kohli with guys who can bat time and counter attack when things are in their favour. Not sure they can afford Sarfaraz either. That doesn't mean doing a search for a troop of Boycotts. Young and Mitchell showed how it's done in this game and they were still scoring their runs at 3.5 rpo.

What's Will Young's situation now? Only way to keep him in the side is to drop Blundell and make one of Conway or Latham keep. NZ could keep also just keep "resting" Williamson in away tests.

Young will make way. Sad, but you can't ask Latham or Conway to open and keep. Before this test I would've said there was a case for replacing Mitchell with Young at 5, but Daz has had a truly brilliant game with the bat and in the field. Sucks for Young but none of us will ever forget his contribution in this series, and odds are injuries will mean he gets another game before too long.

Latham is frequently a passenger outside Asia unless it's a very weak attack. Won't happen but they might gain runs by asking him to keep wicket and bat 6.

Suspect Young is better v spin than seam though. Him coming in for Kane was a blessing in disguise. Kane is no great loss away from home, especially in India.

Also, don't think India are all doom and gloom, even if there in a transition phase. Even if you drop rohit, kohli, jadeja and ashwin tommorow for all more or less underperforming this series, you've got

1.Jaiswal
2.
3.Gill
4.
5.Pant
6.Sarfaraz
7.Axar/Sunday
8.Sundar/Axar
9.Kuldeep
10.
11.Bumrah

That's a very good, young core to build around at home. Some people may be down on sarfaraz after this series, but be still did well against England and made that brilliant 170 + his outrageous FC average. Ide be willing to give him some leeway.

They should perpetually rest Kane in Asia and Young in NZ. Nobody gets dropped and NZ keep winning.

Whatever it takes!!!
Taking stock, I think we lost it when we took things lightly in Bengaluru, made stupid decisions and got bowled out for 46. The team have been trying for this big swinging counterpunch ever since and failed every step when it was clear NZ were ready and anticipating our every move.

Virat and Rohit should get the series in Australia. If we win enough to make it to the WTC finals, they can be there till then. Else, they should be dropped for the very next series after that. The problem is we have no succession plan in place with all of Rahul, Pant, Bumrah, SKY, Hardik tried in that role and no one really owning it, esp. in test cricket. The long term plan seems to have Gill as the all format captain and I am fine with that. But he will be a step down from even Virat as our main batsman and that is something we will have to live with. Hopefully, either Bumrah or even Ashwin can step up in the meantime, for a year or so, while we get Gill or Pant ready for long format captaincy. Ideally we have Hardik leading us in the white ball formats and Pant in the tests and neither playing the other formats.

I wont blame our bowling too much except for the fact that they seemed to deviate from bowling good balls consistently to trying to produce the magic balls every over. Given the scores we put up batting, its understandable but given their experience and expertise, its not excusable. I wish GG and Rohit sit down and have a honest conversation on how they want this side to move forward. Under Rohit, every time we have been in close positions, its obvious the team seems to have the weight of the world on their shoulders. We got a bit lucky in the T20 WC finals but its obvious we need someone who can ease that pressure to them somewhat and also be stern when needed. Feel this is where Shaz and Virat were at their best and what we miss most right now. I wont still write off Gambhir based on one series when he is so new to this role, but its obvious Rohit's captaincy was always vastly vastly overrated in our circles, even in this forum. Hopefully, he cools down and has a rethink on how he handles situations and comes up with some gameplans that actually make sense than just give away easy singles to your best bowlers on tracks where they are getting assistance.

Will be funny if NZ lose to England after this at home and we beat Aus. Not probable but will be funny if it does. Dunno y, just feels like it might happen, for some reason. Maybe I am just seeing them as underdogs after the Ian Chappell article in crapinfo just now.

Sarfaraz is young-ish, very inexperienced and has played some good knocks already. He deserves a bit of time. It can’t be easy as a youngster in this environment. Besides his replacement is KL who’s just.. not inspiring.

For the BG I expect they’ll play the following:

Rohit
Jaiswal
Gill
Kohli
KL
Pant
Jadeja
Ashwin
Bumrah
Akash
Siraj

Post BG I expect Kohli retires and goes out for Sudarshan and/or Sarfaraz. Rohit sticks around for a bit before giving it up too for Easwaran. KL idk, may even end up captain if he can nail his spot down.

Edit: Ooh I forgot about Sundar. Tricky one, Ash probably makes way for him.
