The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

International Captain
Arthur Morris had 4 good series at the start. Each were against mostly mediocre attacks. He was average after that. Lawry has some big performances v good attacks like 1961 England&1963-64 SAF and produced good output over a significantly longer period of time.

Lawry v Anwar is close.

I’d have Sanga at least as above Younis. He was a pure #3 after all. Personally I’d have him #3, Tendulkar 4, Dravid 5, Younis 6, as I think preference should be given to the best bats.

Though I know many think of Dravid as superior so him at 3 and Sanga 5 is fine too.

G Smith > Greenidge as an opening bat for me and you get the added bonus of his captaincy

Also that ROW pace bowling attack is easily the strongest of the 3 sides

Good sides:

I'd go Border for Chappell and bat him at 5 - nice to have a lefthander in the top 6.

Perhaps Lindwall or Davidson for Trueman. Nice to have a left armer in Davo.

Not sure about Sanga as a keeper.

Border and Chappell is close because of the part time spin vs part time medium (fun fact Chappell bowled a lot more)

Faulkner is an elegant solution but based on his era is bowling isn’t on Tayfield’s level. And yeah not sacrificing a full time spinner to have a 4 man pace attack particularly when there’s already Kallis and Sobers in play.

Wondering why Lance Gibbs never gets a run in these teams. He was one of the few that actually held the world record for wickets

Good teams, although if you're playing ABD as a keeper bat, might as well have him in the first team over Flower

Just wanted him lower as he would be keeping, but understand your thinking as well.

Re Lindsay, should probably be Watling or Walcott tbh. BJ it is.

Chappell or Border was the toughest decision, but with Bradman there went Chappell for his catching over Border for his captaincy and being a leftie.

Yeah Lindwall was better and Davo brings more to the table, but the team was looking overwhelmingly Aussie, but you're right.

With the lack of all rounders in the top 6, Sanga was for me the only option.

Kallis was better, but yeah, Faulkner makes more sense and Sobers was better at 2nd and with the ball, so he wouldn't be missed that much.youre right.

The SC team lacks a legit 5th bowler, think that would be an issue.

Tayfield isn't as good as any of the 4 pacers and unless you're playing all the matches in India or SL not worth the down grade imho
The strength of the ROW is the pace attack, lean into it.

The issue is you’re losing out on batting compared to Ashes or RoW since you don’t have the luxury of a Hammond, Kallis, Sobers etc.

No mate, you need a proper spinner. Sometimes pitches are just better for spinners, and outside the subcontinent as well. Do Australia win that first test without Lyon’s 10’fer in NZ? Possibly, but it would at best be a lot closer.

I’m sick of this myth that spinners are practically worthless outside the SC.

Anyway assuming all 3 would play equal amounts of matches against each other does that mean what, RoW basically throws out the white flag in Asia?

IMHO can't take Grace over Chappell, Chappell is needed in the cordon and don't think Grace ever faced anything close to real/ modern pace.

I take Younis over Javed because they were practically identical as bats and Younis is the only option for 2nd. Don't think Jadeja is nearly good enough a bowler for the team, and at 8/ 9 with Wasim there the batting doesn't matter. Bumrah is already ahead of Waqar as a bowler for me.

Flower is no where near a good enough wicket keeper for this level, he would literally cost them matches. This is what happens when you place batting that much ahead of the keeper's actual job, honestly he just wasn't good enough.

First up, want to keep this civil and pleasantly pleased on how it has been this far.

Warne and Murali, the two greatest spinners ever and legitimate match winners. But extremely ordinary vs great players. There's no doubt in my mind that Warne's the weak link for an Aussie attack and against an at India, WI or possibly even SA team, he's being targeted.

Tayfield in my opinion isn't in the same ball park as an Ambrose and Steyn and Marshall and to a slightly lesser extent Hadlee have all proven themselves in all conditions and I believe would fare well in Asia.

Sobers could even throw in a couple overs of leg spin as well on rank turners, and there's Faulkner if you're so inclined.

I know this may not be a popular take, and it's just my opinion.

The final of such a trio would likely be ROW vs the Ashes, and that's the team I'm building to beat.
