Timed events we've come a very close second in (7)

Josh Kerr - 1500m
Matt Hudson-Smith - 400m
Adam Peaty - 100m breaststroke
Matt Richards - 200m freestyle
Ben Proud - 50m freestyle
Women's Four
Men's Pair

Other events where gold was definitely on the cards/very close (5)

Women's shooting
Women's windsurfing
Men's BMX freestyle
Mixed triathlon relay
Men's golf

That's 12, excluding a few like the canoe slalom events, BMX racing etc that were a bit more of a tossup.

Whereas the close ones we've won (4ish):

Women's team sprint
Women's quadruple sculls
Men's mountain biking
Men's triathlon

So definitely a little on the unlucky side overall. But that's sport.

And while we might not have had the rub of the green this time, it's been a great watch
That's also not factoring in the likes of Daryl Neita in the 100m and Dina Asher-Smith in the 200m who were pipped on the line for medals.

I don’t think the Women’s Team Sprint was that close, whilst the mountain bike was only close due to a puncture.

You can add in Boxing too where we’ve had little luck although hard to tell whether more medals would’ve materialised.

Apparently we have 2 strong chances in Taekwondo tomorrow…..so more silverware then!!

I'd add both kayak cross medals to the second list here given that both British athletes came into the final as heavy favourites (especially Clarke) but the chaos of the actual race saw others win instead.

I had them in my list originally, but I was trying to be a little magnanimous about it.

I think regardless it's reasonable to say we've haven't had a great record this Olympics at winning the close ones.

Yeah and like you say, that's just sport. If it was like us in London or Rio where you consistently had strong medal chances and gold medal favourites underperforming by not getting into the podium or even anywhere near the finals of their discipline, then that's when questions should be asked.

Looks like we'll end up pretty much with our expected medal numbers, just down on the golds. There's not much you can do when you run PB's but someone runs a quicker one in the Final. Really felt for Hudson-Smith, don't think he could've really done anything differently.

Aus at 44% Golds to Medals compared to GB 24% tells a story. I guess that might've flipped a bit had the US been rubbish at Athletics instead of Swimming!!

Encouraging we won our women's 4x100 heat easily with 2 faster runners to come in. Knowing the way our games has gone we will win but be dq for a bad changeover.

Great start from KJT in the Heptathlon who leads after 2 events, with the joint highest in the high jump. Her 2 main competitors (Thiam and Hall) are 2nd and 3rd and not far back. Thiam probably remains the favourite.

KJT needs to get through the shot putt without losing too much ground, she should then then make it all up in the 200m.
Its gonna be tough for KJT as Hall and Thiam are much better at the field events than her. Actually i always thought
the hep was weighted in favour of the field events. Even if you come last in a track event its only a fraction away
from the leaders, whereas Thiam can throw 50m+ in the javelin cp to KJT best of about 42m, thats a huge points
diference. Thiam also usually way ahead in the shot. And Hall is good on track and field.
