And yes, I do get that sometimes it's not practical to keep competing in something like high jumping for example, however that's an issue with the format, not with the concept of competing in these situations in general.

Man, I was a thrower back in my school days. I remember one time one of my mates saw me practicing (we were about 11-12ish?) and thought it would be easier to throw it. Poor bloke almost pulled his shoulder out.
