England players and selection discussion thread

I've got more faith in Jimmy being fit for Ashes 2025/2026 then I do Wood, Archer, Stone, Tongue, Robinson

I still don't get the decision. It's elite sport he's still better than everyone else we've got.
because it is super important that england prepare adequately for their next humiliation down under.

Then he would be lying about just love bowling if he doesn't carry on with Lancs.
He'll be bowling in nets as a coach probably, he has said he'll never not want to bowl a ball just to see what it'll do.

True on the fitness thing.

It's also very odd imo to tell someone the first test of the summer is their final game.

What if everyone's injured the next game?

What if he takes 8 pegs?

It's got flavours of "this is definitely the final squad for the world cup" about it.

My guess is that they would have preferred to make a complete break now but decided to give him a Broad-style finale.

I think it's one of those agree-to-differ topics, and I'm aware I may well be in a minority. But, for me, playing for one country in your mid-20s should preclude you from playing for other countries. And yes, I know I'm being inconsistent insofar as I had no issue with Eion Morgan doing the job for us after he'd played for his home country as an adult.
I didn’t agree with Morgan playing for England after he had played official ODIs for Ireland. I saw his case as being different to Ed Joyce’s as Joyce’s early games for Ireland were not official internationals.

In my view, while some people are qualified for two countries, once someone has played a full international for one team, they should not play for another. This for me is a markedly greater display of commitment than playing for another country’s under-19 or A team.

The only exception I would make would be for extreme circumstances such as the Pakistanis who payed for India before partition.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/1d41rrw Eoin Morgan is doing an ama if you want to question him on his dubious actions.

the problem is, the likes of Morgan may then opt to never turn out for Ireland if they believe they’re good enough to go all the way. That doesn’t help anyone

True, but it would only mean a gap of a few years, as in Morgan’s own case. I would argue that it is a small price to pay for the integrity of international sport.

Chris Woakes has announced he’s currently taking a break from the game having lost his father at the beginning of the month.
Very sorry to hear that.

Purely from a cricket point of view, July is still a fair way away.

Thoughts with him and his family.

Ollie Robinson causing trouble to the Leics top order on a flat Hove pitch. As I've mentioned on the T20 thread, he's bowling really well at the mo, totally got his rhythm back and looks fit.

Cook's named in DT as Anderson's replacement... it will be a challenge to get the ball past 75mph with him and Robinson. Robinson has his height 6'4 but I thought England wanted bowlers with speed like Tongue and Stone.

Robinson has been picked as a wild card for Trent Rockets.

Another pet peeve of mine is why there should be any criteria for internationals other than it involves the official national teams of the nations involved.

Should Bairstow still be a first choice specialist test batter? Will they give him the gloves back?
Foakes hasnt really shone as many hoped or cemented his place with his perfs, but going
back to bunter would be a step backwards i think. Or perhaps a complete change: the other
Olly Robinson as keeper? I thought Pope looked better than any of our regular keepers
that time he subbed at keeper, and he used to bat down the order, but I'm sure thats too
leftfield for england.

wouldn’t a little of both be the way to go? Maybe the speed of Tongue and the height of Robinson. The latter has a good test record while Tongue is younger than the always seemingly injured Stone.
