Yes even the obscure Paul Franks played an ODI but never amounted to much in real life. Very effective on early ICC editions though, from memory.
I think he got a series of bad injuries not long after this award and improved his batting when his bowling declined.
Yeah, and I think he was probably considered too slow after, but he was solid for Notts. Don't think any of them have been complete failures.

The award dates back to 1950: Brian Taylor (1956), Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie (1958), John Whitehouse (1971), Dudley Owen-Thomas (1972), Andrew Kennedy (1975) and Ashley Metcalfe (1987) also never played any Tests (or ODIs).

I see the Lions got well beaten in SA, looks like they sent out a decent bowling line up, but partnered them with an U19's batting unit.....the results as expected. Although, a SA opener Bannerman'd their second innings (131 out of 256).

Looks like we borrowed this lady from the woman's team too:

Seriously, are we having "Kasey" as a boys' name in the People's Republic of Brit now?! Thought it was a purely Seppo thing?

England men's Test team - Stephan Shemilt's 2024 awards - BBC Sport Charting England's test match year. I have to say I think it was a bit meh until this NZ series as this is England's first away series victory for a couple of years. The Sri Lanka victory is a minor tick box because they are a decent side, but losing so comprehensively in India and not being able to adapt their game either there or in Pakistan to get scores on the board is a mark down for me.

So it ended up being 9 wins and 8 losses from the year, which was probably about what would be expected. Perhaps one area of concern is the fairly abject performances in dead rubbers Tests (lost 3 of 4). Losing in India no surprise, but falling to SL and then clearly not giving the slightest **** for the final NZ Test were disappointing.

Only 9 Tests I think in 2025 (final Ashes Test obviously in 2026), so you'd like to think the players would be able to peak at the right times.

I think it’s 10. 1 V Zimbabwe, 5 V India, 4 V Oz

Flintoff picks his son for the Lions squad. Of course.
I wondered whether the coach has a pick or is it the choice of the England Selectors?
McCann
McKinney
Rew
Shaikh
is where you'd expect the England selectors might be looking as are Turner and Tongue. Hartley and Bashir already picked for Bazball.

Clever of them to pick Alex Davies as a potential opener as clearly England won't actually drop Crawley for a journeyman.
Yes, that one stood out for me too. Good player who's had an excellent season following a few so-so ones. He's also failed to make an impact on a previous Lions tour. Hard to see him playing for England, Rob Yates may be ruing his failure to convert last season. Both may yet be overtaken by Shaikh.

I guess the ideal Lions player is one who is next in line for a 1st XI spot unless they've already surpassed that level. The next best are those further from the team but who are clearly talented but who would benefit from the experience. I'm sure Rew will be happy to tour but will know he is currently 4th or 5th choice keeper. Bide your time lad.

Three spinners with two SLAs seems a bit of overkill but they want to take a look. Tongue and Turner are a tantalising glimpse into he future if the former can can stay fit and the latter can stay fit and add some consistency to his pace. Overall, plenty to be excited about but hope for a better performance than we saw in South Africa.

People who've seen Rocky Flintoff play speak highly of his talent but we all know he's benefited from his name. It really goes without saying.

I actually respect Josh de Caires for not playing as Josh Atherton but I am sure his connections also helped him

So this is an interesting one. I probably have less of a problem with sons-of-famous-players getting ahead than I do with millionaires' kids but there's still obviously an issue with equality of opportunity.

The two main sources of cricketers across all levels in the UK are cricket families and private schools and I know which one I prefer. I myself come from a cricket family though the best we got over the generations was my uncle making Essex IIs.

I'd rather cricket in England didn't depend on that so much but it's just the way it is.
