Australia underestimated Afghanistan and paid the price, dropping Zampa for Starc, electing to field on a ground where every chasing team has lost in this WC. Never underestimate Mother Cricket!
They didn’t drop Zampa though. But agar is like an albatross around the neck of any national side. He should never be picked. He’s cursed

Australia should have dropped haze not starc. Its a blunder. Now Afghanistan will beat Bangladesh comprehensively and proceed to SF. Australia's match against India wont matter and its going to be tough to beat India anyways

yeah it's nothing personal. but I just checked and we've lost most of the test and ODers he's played in, and he's only barely above a 50% winning rate in T20s thanks to wins against Scotland, UAE and Zimabawe, plus there's 8 wins (!) against Sri Lanka too. it's just bad vibes when Agar plays

Are you suggesting group stage points should be carried forward?
No the rules are obvious, but like for example Australia had a horrible day today yet they are still in the tournament, even if they lose to India they could still be in the tournament if Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh.. Now SA been battling in horrible conditions in New York , then some clutch wins and they slip up once and lose to WI ..That is kinda unfortunate.

Also India will play the 2nd team in Group B even if they finish second, at a venue that they knew they were going to play before the tournament even began , again that's horrible format.

Thats not true.

Winner of Group 1 plays Runner up of Group 2

Winner of Group 2 plays Runner up of Group 1

Just the usual format.

Only thing that is predetermined is that India will play their semifinal in Guyana if they qualify.
Yeah, cricinfo said otherwise earlier but they've amended their post now to say that India will play the 2nd semi in day time regardless of where they finish (used to say India will play Group 2 #2 regardless of where they finish)

But still they would have only lost 1 game before the knockouts , that's kinda harsh
I think its pretty standard like in fifa world cups that you go out with one loss once you have moved from the opening stage. The name is so called "group stage A/B" here but you cant afford to lose a match here.

Then it's just about who has a horrible day when. SA can have a bad day late in the tournament but if they do they would have been knocked out fair and square

It's how it is in round robins unfortunately. Sometimes you can lose a few and still make it eg Pakistan. Sometimes one loss is enough to knock you out. Thats how it is in other sports too. Nothing different here.

And if India finishes in 2nd place in Group 1, they will play the "winner" of Group 2.

Apparently cricinfo misinformed the public. There's no special guarantees for any team. Though India will play their semi final in day time in Guyana but they have not played any other matches there, so conditions will be as new for them as anybody else. No advantage.

Reckon Australia will beat India and qualify ahead of Afghanistan.

India's NRR is so far ahead that even losing to Australia most likely won't dislodge them from 1st position.

I don't feel so bad about NZ losing to Afghanistan now.

They are a legit good T20 team now though so losing to them isn't as embarrassing as it would have been in the past.
It was just Maxwell that stopped them losing by a similar margin too.

The last wicket partnership of 14 runs by Australia was crucial as it has given Australia a 33 run NRR buffer over Afghanistan.

If Aus had been dismissed for 10 less run, buffer would have been only 13 runs! Now it is 33..

Basically Afghanistan have to beat Bangladesh and hope India beats Australia. or They have to thrash Bangers by 33 more runs than the margin Australia beat India by.

Basically NRR is in Australia's favor so Aus probably just need a win to qualify.

When I first saw Ashton when he was chosen ahead of Lyon back in 13, I thought he was pretty dire. Now he looks worse. How he is in a squad leaving out someone like Fraser McGurk is ludicrous. Yeah I know he is there as the second spinner but still absolutely trash cricketer

Where are they playing India? Flat wicket is their only chance to beat India imo

Ind/Aus could be a washout too by the looks of the forecast. That should make it easier for Afghanistan
