Proteas Test squad for New Zealand tour:
Neil Brand (captain, Titans), David Bedingham (Western Province), Ruan de Swardt (North West Dragons), Clyde Fortuin (Rocks), Zubayr Hamza (Lions), Tshepo Moreki (Lions), Mihlali Mpongwana (Western Province), Duanne Olivier (Lions), Dane Paterson (Western Province), Keegan Petersen (Rocks), Dane Piedt (Knights), Raynard van Tonder (North West Dragons), Shaun von Berg (Rocks) and Khaya Zondo (Dolphins)
I'm not sure how many other options for captain there may have been. Brand also offers a spin option which may have helped his case.I must say that this is quite the endorsement for Brand. Conrad must hold him in high regard.
I think De Swardt is the better option as he's definitely the better bat and we could do with the extra bowler. But even though the transformation numbers are measured over the entire season, De Zorzi not being there may open the door for Zondo...Zondo or De Swart could play at 6.
It appears as though he was part of the Pretoria Capitals squad in the SA20 but never played, and hasn't been retained for the upcoming season.I assumed Von Berg had a T20... Surprised he does not.
This is incredibly sad and concerningNeil Brand to lead new-look Proteas side for New Zealand Test tour | Sport
Cricket South Africa named a completely new-look Proteas side that will take on New Zealand in February's two-match Test series tour.www.news24.com
Undoubtedly. However some of this squad have decent first class records and Paterson and Bedingham have impressed in county cricket. From an English perspective, the only comparison I can think of was the team for the WI tour in 1990 and that went much better than might have been expected so you never know. Good luck to them. This is incredibly sad and concerning
New Brand captain. So, do you prefer:
"Brand-new captain", or "Brand, new captain"?
When would they have played this extra test?A very well done to the imbeciles at CSA. Of course, organising an extra test against India would have been awful to their finances, I suppose.
The point is that you can make the profits without relying on a full-strength SA20. The extra test would what, be a week less of full-strength SA20 sides? When would they have played this extra test?
They can't do that. The agreement that CSA have with the SA20 teams is that all the top players will be available. The point is that you can make the profits without relying on a full-strength SA20. The extra test would what, be a week less of full-strength SA20 sides?
I don't agree with the weakened squad, but I don't think CSA have any other means of generating the money the SA20 does. And these franchise owners want the players they payed millions for to be available. CSA has no bargaining power here. It is their fault due to years of mismanagement though. They did try to move the NZ Tests. I'd love to know what Shukri Conrad thinks because he is a proud man who clearly loves Test cricket. The point is that you can make the profits without relying on a full-strength SA20. To be fair to CSA, I don't any of those in charge now were responsible for that mismanagement, so it's a bit of a case of trying to repair the damage that was done.It is their fault due to years of mismanagement though.
