South Africa team selection

I do think the wise thing would be for a sportsman to keep quiet about their political views while actively playing.

I don't know how I would feel about the Proteas if Rabada or Ngidi came out and said they are Malema supporters and think EWC is a good idea, or if Shamsi came and said what Hamas did was great.
He didn't publicly come out and say he supports the war or anything against palestinians, he just said this award is for the young israelie soldiers who go through a lot which is the truth either way.

Shamsi isn't Muslim so bad example maybe meant Amla for example.

This would be a damn shame if this young Jewish lad gets canceled cause of politics, he's a real talent.
As a captain of a multicultural team one needs to be careful where and when one expresses an opinion on such a divisive issue.

If I was him I would be unhappy with whoever leaked what he said to the mainstream media.

I hope he isn't cancelled and merely learns diplomacy.

The more I think about this, the more I think my original assessment was wrong.

Teeger was speaking at a private function, in his personal capacity, not representing CSA or the U/19 Proteas in any capacity. Nothing should happen to him.
As a South African captain you are also the South African. Siya doesn't stop being the Springboks captain when he speaks at a non SARU event.

If you accept the position you accept the cons and the positives. Cons are you are always under scrutiny.

I don't want to take away from the main forum here however this is a very unfair association . Siya speaks openly about his heritage and culture and does everything to support it however deemed acceptable as he is in the majority the Kid being lambasted is Jewish and thus a Minority of a Minority in South Africa . Secondly read Siya book Rise and you'll see he faced a lot and did a lot of questionable things in his personal life and professional life etc. Some people would be dragged over the coals for some of it , he did learn from it and again comparing a 17 year old to a 32 year old . Differences in media training and someone still in School .

Also I think this should be the last of it until we get report from the South African board and get an official stance.

He was speaking at a private function and Siya's employer is SARU, Teeger is not employed by CSA.

Siya's employer is actually his club side.
Teeger represents south Africa as the under 19 Proteas captain with that comes responsibilities.
Someone should have advised him on what topics to avoid.

Use any captain you want as example if you don't want to use siya. Point stands when you are the captain of a national team you have responsibilities.

Last thing I will say on this as don't want this to go into politics. Big difference talking about heritage and talking about soldiers involved in an active divisive conflict.

Ok so ill take extracts out of his interview in direct quotes .

“Coming from a religious Jewish school and then being thrust into the biggest all-boys school in Johannesburg was quite a shift, and it wasn’t easy, but at all times, it was my Jewish faith that grounded me. So, to the Jewish community, thank you for being my home. My journey is truly about Jewish identity and whether it be standing out, missing cricket games, missing opportunities [in order] to observe my faith, those are crucial moments in my life.”

“Hopefully, I can inspire young, religious sportsmen to follow their dreams because, quite frankly, I didn’t think it was possible.”

“So, I’d like to dedicate this award to the South African family that married off one son while the other is still missing,” he said, referring to the family of Rabbi Doron Perez, whose son, Yonatan, who was injured on Saturday, 7 October, got married last week while his other son, Daniel, has been missing since that fateful day. “And I’d like to dedicate it to the state of Israel and every single soldier fighting so that we can live and thrive in the diaspora.”

Just taking those quotes gives a different light , this is politics and not because of the Kid he has a close connection to it due to Faith and Family. It is heritage and something affecting him directly at this moment . The only reason it is front and center is because its in opposition to the support our government official gives . Regarding any other captain , I cannot think of any Minority religious captain in South Africa , can you ?

Hashim Amla is a Muslim and captained SA for a while. There was also Ali Bacher who skipped SA in our last series before we were banned.

Don't know much about Bacher captaincy however Amla had a fair bit of controversy from refusing to partake in certain team events to walking away from Female interviewer because of how she was dressed as well as refusing to wear an alcohol label sponsorship on his kit . I firmly believe we should embrace this rather than letting politics get involved , we talking about sport . When a minority faithful person gets elected they will challenge the norm not out of spite however out of personnel beliefs . If we don't support this they should never be selected .

I believe Amla agreed to take a paycut because of the alcohol sponsorship issue.

Do you have a link to the incident regarding the woman and how she was dressed.

I've never heard about this.

Why are we so determined to destroy ourselves ?
What percentage of the total population is non white? If less than 7/11 of the population is white it feels a bit dumb to try and force that kind of ratio.

I get the appeal of quota in theory, and something like it is 100% necessary given what non white players experienced during the appartied years and at other points. But in practice it seems like it just forces CSA to overplay the Afrikaans players like rabada who are good enough.

Wouldn't a better solution be to either fix the system that allows a large majority of the players to come from a few private schools or atleast ensure that more non white kids go to those schools so they get the proper facilities at a young age and we get more non white players who are at that level. If you use a quota as your major driver I feel like your just gonna get guys like zondo who you don't get the best years out of or you have to develop at the international/A level.

Edit: Did a quick google search and it said 80% of SA is non white. If that's the ratio I don't mind a 7/11 quota in theory. Is there any plans to idk, offer vouchers/scholarships to non white players who achieve at youth level or something so they can go to these private schools that have the coaches and facilities or are they just going to enforce a quota and hope for the best?

If you're extending the list to people who aren't regular captains then there's also Maharaj.

Schools already do this of their own accord. Both Ngidi and Phehlukwayo were the beneficiaries of scholarships which allowed them to attend schools they wouldn't have been able to otherwise (although Phehlukwayo's was actually for hockey).

OK that's good to hear. Feel like it would still be good for the organisation enforcing a quota to use there own money to ensure grassroots stuff develops well rather than relying on the schools to do the heavy lifting (if they are doing that please correct me, got no idea).

Question is if he was a Muslim cricketer on the other side of the coin would he have been in trouble now saying something pro Palestinian? Also freedom of speech? respecting young army soldiers doesn't make him choosing sides or anti other side.
