South Africa team selection

The media backlash has begun, wow this was a very scathing assessment

Whatever it takes!!!
One thing India did well was they kept picking players they needed to play well in India even when playing away series etc. RSA shud plan similarly.

Plus you should also aim to finish strong in the CT in 2025 IMO.

Ryan Vrede is one of those guys I pay very little attention to. He very rarely seems to have anything good to say about South Africa.

the same guy said South Africa can defy expectations with their batting after the Sri Lanka match in the same site, seems nothing more than a classic media hack who builds up the team to knock them down later

Overall I had very little faith in the team going far at the start of the tournament but I must admit they played some great cricket at times. Yeah they slipped up against the Netherlands and got pummeled by India but across the 10 games they played I think they competed well.

I don't want to heap negativity on Bavuma's batting when he was a stand out for years leading up to the WC in ODI cricket (albeit all at home?). I am firmly in the camp that doesn't understand why he played when he was not at 100%. Why even say that? I felt like it was a built in crutch if he failed. I don't for one second think Reeza would have been better in those conditions upfront though. Whilst he is miles ahead of Temba as a T20 dasher,I don't think he has the defensive game to get through the spells from the Australian bowlers yesterday.

Realistically who will be around in 2027?

1. ??
2. ??
3. ??
4. Markram
5. ??
6. ??
7. Jansen
8. Coetzee
9. Rabada
10. ??
11. Ngidi

I honestly can't see Bavuma, Rassie, Klaasen or Miller around in 2027. They will all be around their late thirties! Maybe one or two survives but I can't see all of them making it.

We also have to pay very close attention to the upcoming U19 World Cup. We have gotten so many players from that competition of late , like as in straight after the U19 WC atleast one player in the SA U19 side has gone on to represent the Proteas very soon

Kwena Maphaka seems to be the most likely candidate given that he's already played for South Africa A. He is a bowler though, and it's not like we're lacking in that department.

Another play to keep an eye on is Matthew Boast. I'm not sure if he'll develop into a proper allrounder or remain a bowler who's handy with the bat, but we could do with a few more allrounders as they've been in short supply for far too long.

I believe above mentioned players are very conclusive. I believe someone like Caleb Seleka will also be in the mix going forward for that Legbreak/Wrist spinner call . I also think Senuran Muthusamy and Bjorn Fortuin both might be a stratch for a full rebuild to 2027 as they will be 33 pushing 34 . Not to far a stretch however with a lot of really good youngsters it might be one to far .

There is some serious questions regarding our seam attack however more pressing questions is our captaincy and opening pair . What is the taught on that who will get the nod for Captain , my shout would be Markram. On the openers I think its all about who becomes the frontlne keeper . Of the potential new batsman and established ones there is a copious amount of options. Klaasen(Maybe),Verreynne,Stubbs, Rickleton and maybe Qeshile.
So overall what is the taught , Who will get captaincy ? Who will the openers be ? and lastly who will be the main Keeper .

For me this is the team around the 2027 mark I'm seeing however I'm sure it cannot happen and wont . however would like opinions .

Tony De Zorzi
Jordan Hermann
Zubayr Hamza
Aiden Markram(C)
Dewald Brewis
Tristan Stubbs (W/K)
Marco Jansen
Gerald Coetzee
Keshav Maharaj
Kagiso Rabada
Ethan Bosch/Caleb Seleka (Batting lineup will adjust according to extra seam or spin option)

3 additional reserves . Lungi Ngidi , Donovan Ferreira/Wiaan Mulder , Kyle Verreynne

I still think you can squeak out some "old timers" in the batting and spin department. Remember Imran Tahir
As long as the majoity of the team is not old

I know its a different code but look at Duanne Vermeulen and Wille Le Roux they had pretty decent World Cups

Markram will be the same age as Le roux come 2027 . Realistically Maharaj at 37 might be a shout as you look at the older international cricketers 80% of them is spinners, however Rabada at 32 and Ngidi at 31 in 2027 is relatively old considering cricket terms especially fast bowlers however considering Shami is 33 at this WC and performing its not far fetched.

The definite unfortunately is a lot of the older players might look at T20 money and try and pro-long career further by specializing in t20 around the early 30s in age to try and avoid injury/Fatigue etc. This is becoming even more true in recent years . Faf started retiring from internationals at 35 and now at 39 still doing well in t20 leagues . De Kock did this now before he was even 30 . Truth is he would probably still be good enough at 34 however will not be available .

Yep I forgot to mention the "If palyeys are willing to stick it out"

Is the next 50 Over World Cup in SA?

So what's the post mortem of the WC gents?
If we are being honest , the SA team exceeded expectations, well atleast my expectations.

I did not think we would make it out the group stage but we smashed it. Second in the group and we played some memorable cricket at times..
From where they were when Rob Walter took over to losing a close semi I would say they did a very good job.
I think these are fair comments... and I do think that Walters did an admirable job. But is this WC team a true reflection of skills and available quality of players in SA. I don't think so. And that is the fundamental problem.

Ultimately my problem is again what next? Has this team papered over the huge gaping cracks that is found within CSA by getting to the semi's? I hate the fact that Bavuma has been shoehorned into captaincy because he was a black batsmen. It was an attempt to recreate the Kolisi effect. Clearly was not fit for the job. Was in fantastic form before injury so I don't deny his place in the squad... but then again, was that also papering over cracks because for a long time his place was questioned before that for good reason. For me its clear the Maharaj should have been captaining. And these decisions effects some of our best players, players like QDK retiring from Test cricket and now LO cricket fairly early, is in at least part because of the poor man management and extra stress that SA players have to put up with.

I use that as an example of the continued small but significant decisions that are consistently been made that plague cricket in SA, to both the detriment of the players and fans. So ultimately my question becomes, do we see that changing? Because I honestly don't, I don't see who will take the game forward and do something special with all the talent SA has. This coming NZ Test tour (what's left of it) is a great example of what I see in SA crickets future unless we see some major changes in thinking and management of the game in SA.

All I can say is that I wish the players the best of luck, and hope that somehow CSA starts getting it right.

/end rant

SA and Zim automatically qualify under the "hosts and full members" rule. Will be 14 teams total so Namibia are a good chance too - would be awesome for them to have some home WC games.
South Africa, Zimbabwe and the top 8 ranked odi sides thereafter.

Difficult task for Namibia to get one of the remaining four spots.

They're ranked 16th at the moment and I do think they're better than Nepal (15th) at full strength, so they'll be knocking on the door if they can develop some young players in the next cycle. Weise will probably be too old which is a shame.
