*Official* Third Test (Headingley, Leeds) 6–10 July

Interesting to understand the dynamics of Wood's pace...

You have the slingers Thomson, Tait
You have the taller bowlers like Starc or Lee

Wood is only 183, so on the shorter end of modern bowlers...

England will be disappointed with anything below 350 . To be seen of course but the second day of a headingley pitch is usually the best day for batting

Australia’s batting is beginning to look suspect in their last three innings . England have a decent chance of getting a test back now
Mate we made 400+ while batting under cloud cover for most of the innings in the first innings of the last test.

A day on and I'm still not sure how to feel about that Mitch marsh knock. Him walking in first session of a test match and smashing 118 vs England, in England, on a deck with plenty for the bowlers where noene else in the lineup looked like hitting the ball off the square feels so surreal to me.

Quick arm, technically correct (bowls over braced front leg with weight going directly at target, etc), good athlete, etc

No real secret to it but very view have that combination

Most express pace bowlers are around Wood height. Akhtar, Steyn, Bond, Nortje, Ferguson

Tallers bowlers tend to lack pace surprisingly.

Steyn wasn't express. Not across the duration or peak of his career anyway
Yeah, though he was very sharp as a kid though. Remember him cracking 150 regularly in a test match v New Zealand in 2006. He obviously decided he'd have a longer career by reigning it back to that 140ish sweet spot.

Yeah, I think any NZ batsman on that tour would struggle to agree that Steyn couldn't be express.

Mark Wood is such a thrill to watch as a bowler. The nuts to Khawaja and Starc in particular, 150km in-duckers. He has 32 Ashes wickets at 27, that is so good.

Y'know I think everyone has such negative memories of Shoaib because he was such a prima donna wanker. The dude took 180 wickets at 25 in one of the most batsman friendly eras in history. Wood maybe a MUCH more likeable character but he hasn't achieved half of what Shoaib did.
Exactly. Shoiab is one of the most talented bowlers to ever exist. He was a force of nature at his peak. The closest to his like since is Mitchell Johnson or February-March 2015 Mitchell Starc.

Don't think he got injured that much either, from memory? Unless gonorrhea counts
