An average Australian first-class batsman is not going to perform the same in England at FC level as he is in Australia at a similar standard of competition

Its hard enough. And their form in the tests suggested they'd have trouble at club cricket let alone shield.

Test success is its own matter. Good FC cricketer failing in tests is the norm, not vice versa.

But they didn't succeed. They sucked. Sucked hard. They were so bad it is reasonable to state they'd have struggled in grade cricket. Particularly when the pitches aren't as good.

By my calculations, based on home and away numbers for Australian batsmen, if Div 1 CC & Sheffield Shield were the same quality, an Australian batsman averaging 50 in Australian first-class cricket would average about 28.63 in the same level of competition in England.

Given that the numbers actually tend to be about the same, or even higher in England, this indicates that the Shield is at least 170% the strength of division 1 County cricket. Not quite twice as good, but not far off.

If you you think S.Marsh in there is a cheat you've also got strong back ups like Philippe, Turner, Stoinis and D.Short.

If we're being completely literal Harris probably gets in there but he doesn't stand out. If he were to move to WA tomorrow he's not ousting Bancroft and Whiteman and likely only plays because S.Marsh is done.

Nobody in that line up is getting into the England first 11. A few might be squaddies but that's about it.

Yeah that's the thing, it would have to be the best England players playing to be appropriate. Whereas most half decent Aussies state players will dominate county cricket, or at the very least hold their won due to the lower standard.

Also County cricket is more commercialised, so it's normal to contract overseas players and make it worthwhile. A top-class English domestic cricketer isn't going to land a contract to play in the Shield like an Aus player is going to in England.

I mean Maddinson was pretty much Durham's worst batsman last season so I'd argue somewhat against that.
