That is what I was referring to (the cricket team). All 4 SENA countries are ethnically diverse.Only in the context of their cricket team though. As a society we're pretty diverse
Stay classyIndeed. At the junior level they see a darky and instantly discard them
I mean, that's essentially what Spark and co are implyingStay classy
You can't play grade cricket here and not notice how diverse it is compared to the state and franchise teams, let alone the national side. NZ cricket is a lot more diverse at the higher levels.Idk how anyone can look at the lack of players from non-European backgrounds at the Australian team and look at it but anything but a massive long-term issue on talent identification grounds alone, let alone representation grounds, but I guess these are the same people who foam at the mouth at the captain mildly hinting that we should take climate change seriously.
In fairness there are a lot of people who are doing their utmost to change this. But they're not getting enough traction at the top level where the old guard still reigns.
It does take time tbf. Like GAS it's clearly improving, but the state sides definitely don't reflect that yet.You can't play grade cricket here and not notice how diverse it is compared to the state and franchise teams, let alone the national side. I've said this before in other threads but it's not just about south asian representation. NZ has a kid with a Chinese mum playing for them (Chapman) and there are at least two other Eurasian kids in first class cricket (Max Chu, Ken McClure). Aussies will still talk about Richard Chee Quee who retired 20+ years ago.
Most offices here are very diverse too at the entry to mid senior levels but once you go higher than that it's very different. Tbf that is also changing but it will take a long time before we see anything significantly different representation wise there. You can't play grade cricket here and not notice how diverse it is compared to the state and franchise teams, let alone the national side. Same in NZ. We've had a few players of Maori descent over the years - Parore, Heath Davis, Tuffey, Bond, Ryder, Anaru Kitchen, Boult etc. but there are some gifted sportspeople we are missing out on. Also Murphy Sua and Ross Taylor are the only 2 Pasifika (both Samoan) players we've had.And the indigenous pathway clearly needs a lot of work. You can't look at the conveyer belt of talent the AFL in particular manages to find yearly and tell me there aren't a few quality cricketers there too.
I'm not talking about playing them. I mean you played Archer, Ali etc. Unfortunately the callous indifference towards those from a different ethnic background that is a carry over from your days as an empire can't be papered over by a few seemingly inclusive selections. Archer was driven into the ground, and Ali had issues within the team.Would hazard a guess we’ve played a higher % of non-whites than Australia in Test Cricket, pal
mateComing from a country with absolutely no issues of that sort of any kind
I have seen this first hand. Guy I played with a couple of times when I was about 16 or so springs to mind, easily looked the most talented player in the otherwise crappy youth team I was in with both bat and ball, but he was already a gun junior footy player too by that stage. It does take time tbf. Like GAS it's clearly improving, but the state sides definitely don't reflect that yet.

Coming from a country with absolutely no issues of that sort of any kind, and any that we did have was you guys at least 75% of the time anyway, this 'sportswashing' you are seemingly trying to attempt is quite shocking. I don't know why we go to England and play The Ashes to be honest.
Absolutely awful. When was this? There was an incident when I was umpiring involving an indigenous player and an opposition player with a reputation for being a loud mouth. The latter said to the indigenous batsman, "Get back in your tree monkey." The batsman reacted by shoving the loud mouth to the ground. My fellow umpire insisted on reporting the batsman but said he hadn't heard any racist comment. At the tribunal hearing loud mouth claimed he had said, "Get back in your crease funky." Having heard the original comment quite clearly I indicated this only for the tribunal to question when I had last had my hearing checked. They then suspended the indigenous player for 3 matches while loud mouth got off Scot free. I told the tribunal that the hearing had racist connotations and, as a result, I was demoted next game to a lower grade.
