South Africa team selection

Test squad for the Bangladesh series:

Dean Elgar (captain), Temba Bavuma, Daryn Dupavillon, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Duanne Olivier, Keegan Petersen, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams, Khaya Zondo.

I'm happy about Dupavillon, as he'll be used to Kingsmead conditions, but Zondo? Hamza wasn't considered for personal reasons, but rather than be forward-looking and pick a young player like Van Tonder, they opt for a 32-year old who's a solid domestic player at best and is never going to set the world alight at international level.

The horse is dead... I`ve given up beating it.

..seriously liked to have seen Coetzee in there, and obviously van Tonder. I`m not to unhappy for Zondo as he has shown some decent form recently but what is the chances he plays, and what is the chances he keeps his place when others return? He has been treated pretty poorly at times, and this feels like a potential for disaster if he plays and then gets discarded again.

Zondo has been very good for the Dolphins this season in all formats. But even if he gets a gig this is not a long term solution. The rest of the squad isn't half bad. Harmer over Linde because of the lefties?

One thing which comes to mind is that transformation played a role in his selection, but if that was the case then why not De Zorzi? He scored a similar number of runs to Zondo in the 4-day competition, and was a bit more consistent with more 50s while Zondo's stats have been boosted somewhat by his unbeaten double century. He'd be a more positive pick than Zondo, as Stephen said, dead horse.

I think it's an indication that they're seriously considering playing two spinners, and unfortunately for Linde he loses out due to being the same type of bowler as Maharaj.

I wondered whether's Zondo's reasonable part-time offies had played a role in his selection - if they don't go with two proper spinners they might want the option amongst the batsmen - but he doesn't seem to have been doing any bowling at all recently, so probably not.

If SA are playing 2 spinners and Mulder ATM Linde is a must. There batting lineup is thin enough with half there first choice batting lineup gone and Mulder at 6/7 who's not test standard with the bat yet.

They got called some years ago. Not sure if they bowled much if at all after that.

I feel for Linde but Harmer is definitely the better pure bowler. I think Sipamla is playing. I'm not a fan current Olivier or a big believer that Stuurman is Test standard. Could be my Dolphins bias but give me some Dupaviĺlon. I was just wondering whether Rickelton plays as keeper and Verreynne as a pure batter as they have done that before in the WI. Might be an option, especially after his century in New Zealand.

1. Elgar
2. Erwee
3. Petersen
4. ???
5. Bavuma
6. Verreynne
7. Mulder
8. Maharaj
9. Harmer
10. Oliver
11. Sipamla

Hmm I think it is a possibility but I'd wait to see who plays in the ODIs. The quota is on an average basis. Makram,Jansen,Rabada and VDD played the last NZ Test. But yeah,Zondo could he debuting....sigh.

Right now, most combinations of the bowlers are possibilities as with all our frontline seamers missing we don't have much to go on as to what the selectors might be thinking. Maharaj obviously plays, you'd think that Sipamla is pretty much a certainty, and they'll probably go with Mulder rather than an extra batsman (and definitely go with him if they play two spinners). But as for the others, who knows?

I'm probably guilty of mixing up the T20 performances with the ODI team but I'm struggling to pin point what the exact issues are? It's largely the same group of players, but the performances have been on opposite ends of the spectrum lately.

There are probably two spots in that top 6 that aren't properly filled. Malan obviously deserves some rope with the runs he has scored, and QDK is QDK. VDD has also put runs on the board for a prolonged period and averaging 70 over 30 odd innings is commendable. Miller is the only batsman we gave that can smoke a 70(50) coming in late in an innings. But then things get a little muddled...

1. Bavuma is the captain but him and VDD are so similar. And he is probably best opening but Malan has scored the runs up top.
2. Markram,Reeza,Klassen,Verreynne,Hamza and Zondo have been the other batsmen trialed and I don't think they know the best spots for any of them. Verreynne probably the man in favour now.
3. The allrounder spot is definitely up for grabs. Phelukwayo has been given a long run but he hasn't developed. Hulk is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get guy. Still think T20s is his best format. Parnell is a proven commodity and we know what his best is as well. Mulder is the great hope but he hasn't been consistent at all.

Loads more issues but I think there needs to be a complete reset. Can't see this team competing in high scoring games.

One thing that has bugged me about recent teams is Van der Dussen coming in at 5. He's got a ridiculously good record which is starting to get into more than just a few flukey innings territory, so surely you want him at the crease for as long as possible? Maybe not at 3 as perhaps you want a buffer between him and the opening bowlers, but there's no justifiable reason to bat him any lower than 4.

I don't know why Verreyenne did not bat 6 and shift everybody else up one...

They seem to miss Nortje, though they were not winning with him, and who else should be playing?

Statistically the team shapes up well. They have a strong opening pair, middle order with good stats albeit low S/R, a power hitter, and a good bowling line up. Even in the second ODI, they let Bangladesh off.
Bavuma citing a lack of intensity and Boucher saying they can't play spin on the Highveld. Both need to be shown the door.

I hope that CSA and the men's team are looking at the Woman's team and seeing how you actually build a class experienced team, with quality players. It takes time effort and dedication and the want to do things properly without taking short cuts.
