South Africa team selection

This is going to be a massive test of our fast bowling depth. We'd definitely still be able to put together what on paper should be a handy bowling attack, but it's going to be horribly inexperienced at international level with very little to go on as to how well they'll do.

The article mentions Sipamla, Williams, and Olivier. Any guesses as to who else might be in the squad? Stuurman played against New Zealand and Migael Pretorius played for South Africa A, so could very well be in the mix. I'd like to see Coetzee and Dupavillon there, but neither has had the best season, which might count against them.

Although I'm not all that bothered about Markram and Van der Dussen not being there - as long as they make sensible selections for their replacements (which admittedly might be asking a bit too much).

Make the pitches a bit spicy I guess to help the bowlers - the second stringers looked weak IMHO
Most of the test batters should be there barring Markram right

Good luck that. Kingsmead was almost turning square for Sundays 50 over game between dolphins and titans.

In that case, play Maharaj, Harmer and Linde. Have Mulder or Pretorius take the new ball with Sipamla.
Get Zondo in as well.

Bangladesh have a chance at Kingsmead IMO. It's very subcontinental like.
1. Elgar
2. Erwee
3. Petersen
4. Rickelton/Hamza
5. Bavuma
6. Verreynne
7. Mulder
8. Linde
9. Maharaj
10. Olivier
11. Sipamla

That's probably how I see the team being picked. Perhaps they could bring Harmer in for Mulder and shift Linde to 7. To be fair it's not THAT far off the full strength team except the bowlers.

Just an aside, I don't agree with Elgar's "litmus test" comments. Yeah "National Pride" or whatever but I don't think you can begrudge the players wanting to make sure they keep their IPL franchises happy. Sport is a fickle beast, one injury,or a loss of form and you are done. Make that money while you can. It would be a different topic if it were a T20 mercenary situation but I don't believe it is that.

If Makram goes to the IPL as is expected, I don't think he has the right to walk back into this team any time soon though. Back of the line. VDD as well.

Not sure he really believes it himself, was probably just trying to do his job and convince them to play for his team with whatever arguments he had. Fair enough IMO.

That's true. Hopefully a discussion was had behind the scenes. CSA don't have the deep pockets that would allow the proteas to turn down the IPL,but I guess you need your Test Captain to prove his loyalties.

Not a bad team, I would accept it. I would still like Coetzee to be given the opportunity here.

Edit: also van Tonder....

Fine with the players going IPL route in this case, not sure I would be fine with it generally, particularly with the "new improved extended" ipl... that could create quite difficult timing windows for us.

For those who are more knowledgable than me (i.e. everyone who contributes regularly to this thread) how good is Keegan Petersen?

Watched a bit of him during the series against India and thought he looked like quite a stylish player.

Very good player, lots of talent and time. Seems to have a good temperament. I don't think he will be an all time great for SA but would be happy to proved wrong.

Yeah, I'd like to watch him more tbh. He reminded me a bit of a pre-captaincy Michael Vaughan for some reason. Great technique when playing certain shots, particularly on the drive iirc. Just one of these players who immediately strikes you as likely being quite good from their poise and deportment.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think the new KP is still a bit raw but what is encouraging is he seems to be able to learn and get better even within the series. So if that trajectory continues, he should be a very good player and a mainstay for RSA batting, at least in tests. I think he is not that young though.

Definitely has the temperament and the ability to play some stylish shots. Him playing his domestic cricket in Durban would hopefully mean he is more at home against spin than some of the Highveld batsman. What I enjoyed in that series against India is he looked to score, but he was never overly aggressive.
