PS starts back tomorrow... Hazeldine making a come back for Canterbury. He's been through lots and great to see him playing professional cricket again.

No Adi Ashok even though Sommerville is not playing tomorrow. Will O'Donnell comes in for Sommerville. Don't they rate Ashok in red ball cricket?

No Allen. It's a weird Wellington squad, with McPeake and Newton playing A cricket. There's only Sears as a specialist bowler. Keeper Callum McLachlan should probably bat 10!

Strange that surely they can do with some batting from Allen but he probably wanted a break.

I'm guessing the guys are off to India for IPL mid March?

That's very strange, no Newton, McPeake and Bennett. Bennett retired though. Still have reasonable bowling with Sears, Smith, Neesham and Van Beek. ND going with lots of spinners.

Finn is out as a household covid contact, I'd say Ashok would be the same.
That's bad timing. Allen would only get 1 or maybe 2 opportunities to play FC outside of Spring as he'll always be missing the last 2 (or 3?) rounds due to the IPL. Difficult to see any sort of all-format career path for him with current NZC domestic scheduling pattern.

Kristian Clarke (ND) makes his domestic debut, Zak Foulkes (C) his FC debut.

Anurag Verma doesn't play his first FC game in 5 years as ND go with 3 spinners.

Inexplicably Wellington have left Nathan Smith out, who I'd have thought makes the team as a specialist bat and a specialist bowler. Have to assume injury / close contact. McLachlan is listed to bat 10!

Auckland's squad looks very batting-heavy, with Jamieson/Ferguson/Somerville/Ashok all not playing.

Hazeldine plays his first domestic game for 2 years. Contrary to their opponents, Canterbury's side is very bowling-heavy.

He's the joint leading wicket taker in the competition. From back in Spring. Would be good to know if this is an improved in recent seasons thing, or improved at Wellington causation. Rather than a recent Spring-greentop explanation.

Another guy totally had the momentum sucked out of his season - either by the crap domestic scheduling, or by Wellington having 'too many' bowling options in white-ball cricket. And the rain meaning 3 abandoned List As. Although TBF, he is pretty mediocre at T20 at this stage, and seems to be used as a power play specialist only? (If at all)

Anyway. He's bowled 23 overs in his last 10 matches , over last 2 months (the cricinfo recent matches feature). Never once fulfilling his full allocation.

So, can't be a workload reason.
LA: 2 overs (1/21)
LA: 6 overs (3/51)
LA: 4 overs (0/15)
T20: 1 over (0/21)
T20: 2 overs (1/12)
T20: 1 over (1/4)
T20: DNB
T20: DNB
LA: 1 over (0/14)
LA: 7 overs (1/23)

Injury or covid, maybe?

Guppy playing the "smash medium-pacers" school of FC batting. Probably a good method against Canterbury tbh.

EPOO looking disappointingly similar to the Spring pitches.

Cobham Oval looking like a more proper Autumn pitch

and he's only had 3 bats in the last 60 58 days since New Year test match finished on 5th Jan (may he have to wait one more day, to the 59th day, as Wgtn are fielding):

Bit like Tom Blundell couple of years or three ago. Was in the BC squad but barely got to play. I don't know why the players don't get released if they're not going to be in the playing XI for black caps.

Leaving out Nathan Smith is a shocker unless he's injured. If he's listed as 12th then no injury but they've dropped him. I see he's the 12th man, that is a terrible thing to do. He's had a great time with the bat and the ball but they leave him out. Is there a reason for playing Van Beek particularly when he's going to be involved in white ball cricket for the dutch. Like I've said before it's always the younger ones that take the cut. I'm starting to dislike the firebirds set up now. The senior players seems to be calling all the shots and the coach seems pretty useless. Can't wait to see a change in coaching, captaincy and management. Firebirds slowly starting to head the late 2000s state by the looks of it.

Logan Van Beek hasn't appeared in a single first class game this season for firebirds. I'm guessing he last played a first class game last season and he makes the side ahead of Nathan Smith :wallbash:

Van Beek missed early season Plunket Shield as he was playing T20I World Cup for Netherlands and then in MIQ.

Agree it is bizarre for Wellinton to play Gibson (or Bhula) ahead of Smith. Even if Smith had some minor injury that prevented him bowling his normal number of overs, he has enough batting talent to bat #5 #6.

Even if you take Van Beek's good form into account in white ball cricket, Gibson was dropped from the side only recently. I'm hoping Smith had a niggle hence missed out otherwise it's unfathomable you'd sit your top wicket taker that also gets reasonable runs.

It's possible he may be injured and he's the 12th man as they only take 12 players, a physio and a coach these days.

Shipley continuing his good form. But, as I say, EPOO is too green, so not really learning anything different here about him from what he was doing well back in Oct/Nov.
