I think Macewell will play or come close to (unless his PS form isn't great).
Macewell in Santner's spot? I think selectors are very keen on Ravindra for the spinner all-rounder.

Macewell batting top 4 or being backup batter? Hard to see him being picked ahead of the 5 posted above by Mike5181. Unless they want Nicholls or Young to play Plunket Shield as prep for winter test tour.

I agree that's probably the best team and squad with the 12 missing (except Mitchell won't be available). But. That's quite an old team. Only 1 player under 25, the only other 'young' player getting an 'unexpected' opportunity here is 27 years old and pencilled to bat 6.

1. Martin Guptill (Age: 35)
2. Henry Nicholls (30)
3. Will Young (29)
4. Ross Taylor (37), he'll be 38 when this series is played.
5. Tom Latham (29)
6. Mark Chapman (27)
7. Colin de Grandhomme (35)
8. Nathan Smith (23)
9. Kyle Jamieson (27)
10. Matt Henry (30)
11. Ish Sodhi (29)

Reserves: Worker (32), Sears (24) , Mitchell (30), Rippon (30)/Ashok (20)

(Of the 12 missing IPL players, I'd class 3 of them as young; Allen, Phillips, Seiffert)

So, in summary. I'd try to get more youth in there. Only 2 I can think of as remotely promising enough / currently qualified enough is Ravindra and Fletcher. Maybe Josh Clarkson.

I think Ravindra will be preferred over any other spinner just because of his batting. He's a must in white ball cricket particularly with the world cup in India coming up next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bracewell is picked. He's a good white ball cricketer and his bowling is not all that bad.

Cleaver was in the ODI squad for Australia wasn't he? Or was it Fletcher? One of those should make the Netherlands squad.

I don't think the ODI squad to tour Aussie was announced. But the core test players weren't going to go (perhaps de Grandhomme or Henry might have gone), and I hope the selectors would have picked Cleaver or Fletcher ahead of Seifert.

Cleaver is injured, with two possible Plunket Shield games before ODI squad for Netherlands is selected. The selectors might prefer Fletcher anyway, or perhaps prefer an extra young batter (Clarkson?) or an extra spinner all-rounder (Macewell? Rippon?) instead of a backup keeper.

There's definitely some talent coming through but don't expect them to be performing from day one. They look reasonable but not like a Nathan Smith who you knew was going to perform from day 1. Both Broom and Anaru moving on, Rutherford back in the mix and Duffy also back in the mix for BCs Otago needs some experienced established players.

Hopefully Foxcroft will be back this year but to qualify for black caps he had to do the cycle of three years all over again.
If Foxcroft does return I really hope the ICC exercise some discretion given he was effectively locked out due to Covid19 and inflexibility by NZ immigration officials.

Plunkett shield starting again this week. Guessing most black caps won't play unless they were on bench. Would be nice to see the black caps play couple of matches before heading out to IPL or playing the dutch. It'll be a good watch.

I don't think it will matter too much. He's still very young with very few games under his belt. The selectors will want to see a bit more.
They might not need to see another four year's worth though. If he dominates the next two seasons they'll be considering him, and it's at that point I think he could get a special allowance.

I can't see them counting his time spent in SA over the past couple of years as part of his qualification but I think a great case could be made to suggest that he shouldn't have to go back to zero and start again. He should be able to resume his qualification period from where it was cut off.

I agree, that's quite reasonable even if he was a 30 year old journeyman

I really thought I'd seen a squad but now can't find it, perhaps it was a speculated squad from somewhere instead.

I will continue to hope that either Fletcher or Cleaver is selected for the Netherlands ODIs and gets a game - give Latham a break from keeping.

ICC are not always reasonable about eligibility.

I recall Hamish Marshall not being allowed to represent Ireland in the 2011 World Cup. He hadn't completed his 4 year stand down after playing in the 2007 World Cup for NZ, because the seasonal timing meant that the actual gap between "4-yearly" World Cups was a little less than 4 full calendar years.

I think England supported Ed Joyce getting some leniency around this so he could play for Ireland again but I might be wrong.
