As I recall, the only article from Conn that linked his experience as a media manager with Justin Langer's performance was clearly marked as opinion. These recent ones have been news articles through talking with sources which he pretty clearly would have access to regardless of his recent employment
Even this is odd, though. If I or any of my colleagues had done that back when I was a journalist it would have raised serious eyebrows. It simply would not have been allowed. Unfortunately in journalism the big egos get to win more often than not, and Conn certainly has a big ego. Maybe I am just bitter that I couldn't get away with that but it sits badly with me, and raises serious questions about his motivation in reporting these stories (even though I'm sure Langer is a nightmare and I think he should be sacked)

Think that it was Wayne Bennett who said that one of the secrets to being a successful long term coach is to have a healthy roster turnover as there’s only so many times that you can deliver the same message before it gets stale

Test cricket teams generally don’t have high player turnover so a coach’s tenure is typically pretty short

Bobby Simpson was the right man for the time and together with Border instilled discipline into what was basically a rabble

However, his time was up after the team became successful as the senior players no longer felt that they needed to be relentlessly drilled

Langer’s time might simply have come if the players aren’t listening anymore

Whatever it takes!!!
Ultimately, the players are the ones who need to perform, so to that extent their input does matter with respect to the coach and his coaching methods. If they are looking for a yes-man, it will soon show up in their performances too, coz there is no way some of that hubris does not make it out to the field. But from everything I have read, it just seems like Langer has created too intense an atmosphere that does not work well with the modern international. Kumble seems to have been the same. And Andy Flower. There is a real generational difference here, I suppose.

Fully expecting this opinion to be wildly unpopular, but I strongly believe Darren Lehmann was the right man for the moment when he first coached Australia. After the unmitigated disaster that was the Mickey Arthur era, Australian cricket needed someone as far removed as possible from Arthur's hardline disciplinarianism, Lehmann was exactly the sort of character needed to smooth over the internal issues that his predecessor directly caused.

Things went largely downhill from there, but it was still the right move to appoint Lehmann in the first place

the difference seems to be that the players weren't listening to Langer because the message got stale, they just seemed to be sick of his ****

I don’t care if langer is sacked as I think he’s an average coach, part of the culture that caused the problems leading into Cape Town and also probably a Tory.

but if they replace him with a player endorsed puppet so the lunatics are running the asylum, then the side will go backwards at a rate of knots. I sense a lot of these blokes want to be cuddled not coached, and it’s that sort of bull **** which gets you to where England is atm and those joke comments by that idiot Collingwood .
I agree. While I don't think the fire and brimstone approach used in many sports half a century ago is appropriate, it appears we are dealing with a 'snowflake' generation that avoid home truths.

So now extra leaks giving Langer angel wings with these claims he knocked back bonuses for moral reasons.

Hmmmm

Or maybe it's somewhere in the middle, right? Sportsmen want to be treated decently and have a working environment that allows them to perform at their best mentally and physically. I don't think anyone gets to the elite level and wants a lollipop and a participation certificate. That sounds like a real Neil Harvey thing to say. Home truths can be delivered in a way that isn't being a complete ****ing sook, kicking over bins, and generally operating on the knife edge between being Mr Happy and Mr Psychopath

People don't understand (nor do I, first hand) that international sport is mentally grueling - especially in COVID. It's not sustainable to have a guy flipping off the handle, going super intense with quotes and Confusius level pseudo stuff and generally just not allowing them to mentally perform. Hotel rooms are exciting when you're in the Bahamas with the mrs, not when you're locked in there for 14 days every time an away tour happens, or in some slum dog town like Hamilton.

So how much of a reason for Australia's loss to India last season was down to Langer, and how much of a reason is Australia winning the T20 World Cup & Ashes down to Langer.

The twin home losses to India, particularly last year's, are the greatest embarrassment in Australian cricket history.

Worse than anything during WSC or in the mid 80s, worse even than losing to Bangladesh or SL away. They are the worst results since test cricket started, and for those results alone Langer should not just be sacked, he should also be stuck in a 6x8 foot cell with Ben Stokes for a period of indefinite detention.
