i don't know what this is about. It's been reported at length that the two assistants have picked up responsibility that was taken away from Langer, so obviously those two would be fine. Then you've got Trevor Bayliss. The issue with a replacement is mainly that they will be asked to do more than the current head coach because the current head coach got turned into a figurehead. (and also that the next T20 WC won't be decided solely by Aaron Finch winning every coin toss)
i'd argue that the world t20 does not actually matter tbf

I’ve never liked Langer and I can’t quite pinpoint why. Just seems a sycophant to me. And has an annoying intensity about things. They’re just personal issues and don’t reflect his ability to coach, but I imagine some players are just over him.

I imagine that's the reason he needs to go - someone as intense as him, coupled with COVID bubbles and the heightened intensity of that whole scenario (in an international program that is full on anyway) can't last forever. Could work if he only had the LO stuff, or Tests, or a limited workload.

I'd love to see Langer coach England, for the lols.

Justin Langer has put his already tenuous position as national cricket coach in further jeopardy after melting down in a meeting with Cricket Australia.

The CA board is likely to take a dim view of Langer’s behaviour when it meets to discuss his tenure on Friday.

In an increasingly desperate attempt to keep his job despite a full-scale player and support staff mutiny back in August about his intense and inconsistent micromanagement style, Langer is refusing to accept anything less than a full contract renewal.
reminder:

yes of course. it seems he was all but dropped anyway with the assistant coaches taking up the slack. the only reason to keep him is to avoid annoying his ex-team mates in the media who take an attack on Langer as an attack on them
the dude was clearly all but sacked in the off-season and the discussion here is whether to restore him to the position that he was removed from, not to extend what he is currently doing, which is clearly not tenable.

One thing I'll say, CA have played this pretty bloody well imo

I’m surprised at how well they’re holding course in the face of a pretty naked media campaign by all of Langer’s ex-teammates in the media.

if langer is all but out, i wonder which guys are going to do better now his weird CLUMP DOG mentality **** isn't going to be dominating the locker room

you'd hope it's for the better!

they're probably just delighted that Gilchrist, Ponting and co haven't actually made a fuss about Langer so clearly being side-lined. it's extremely easy to ignore those guys saying that he must be extended because he won the Ashes/WC when CA already all but removed him from the post and just kept him around to keep the ex-players quiet. Lehmann almost appears to be the only one who gets what is happening when he says Langer should walk away with his head held high

This shouldn't really surprise me but the fact Malcolm Conn shuttles between comms roles for Cricket Australia and reporting on Cricket Australia is a bit weird, and not something that's generally encouraged in journalism.

He's a pretty awful person by all accounts so it's not surprising he gets away with this kind of thing.

I know it's a poor metric but there's a lot of support for Langer on facebook articles...

Well yeah that's the massive problem for CA. Langer is beloved and there's what feels like a dozen members of the teams of the 90s and 2000s with media roles ready to take up his fight for him. It's a hard PR battle

The hardest thing for CA is the captain isn't going to knife Langer, nor do anything but praise his achievements over the four years. Coupled with the 90s/2000s brigade, you're right - that's a pretty hard PR battle.

Who is likely to apply if advertised? Gillespie, Trevor Bayliss again? Who else? Ronald McDonald?

Even before he joined cricket admin I didn't think much of him; came across regularly as snarky and bitter.

But now that he's rejoined after working for cricket admin it's even worse; just totally compromised imo.

I don’t care if langer is sacked as I think he’s an average coach, part of the culture that caused the problems leading into Cape Town and also probably a Tory.

but if they replace him with a player endorsed puppet so the lunatics are running the asylum, then the side will go backwards at a rate of knots. I sense a lot of these blokes want to be cuddled not coached, and it’s that sort of bull **** which gets you to where England is atm and those joke comments by that idiot Collingwood .

Eh, don't really have a problem with it. When he was part of CA, he towed the party line like a good little employee. Ricky Ponting going back and forth between assistant coaching for Australia and being the main broadcaster on C7 is more troubling imo as the conflicts of interest don't have any kind of editorial standard applied.

As I recall, the only article from Conn that linked his experience as a media manager with Justin Langer's performance was clearly marked as opinion. These recent ones have been news articles through talking with sources which he pretty clearly would have access to regardless of his recent employment

Brettig's article was interesting for the comparison with Taylor and co being consulted in reducing and then removing Bob Simpson

It’s patently clear that with Paine as Test captain, the dynamic with Langer was similar to that of Allan Border and Bob Simpson, where the coach was a major decision-making figure. But when Mark Taylor replaced Border in 1994, Simpson first saw his role reduced – after the board consulted the senior players Taylor, Steve Waugh, David Boon and Ian Healy – and then concluded in 1996. His replacement, the amiable Geoff Marsh, was a much less dominant figure.

“I’d been thinking about who I would like ideally as a coach,” Taylor revealed some years later. “And it was someone who would keep the side lively, keep the drills interesting. But in terms of the tactics, I didn’t think I needed a Bob Simpson-style coach. I had Waughs, Warne, Healy; some very smart cricketers. We didn’t need too much extra.”
I suspect Taylor, Waugh and Healy will all moan player power if Langer gets moved on though....

You're right, they probably will - but it feels like such a tired old phrase. Player power has a negative connotation but there's certainly times where it's a necessary movement. If a Board or the CA fishheads are in charge of appointment without significant player input, of course Langer goes around again on results. But the players are the ones who are in that environment day in, day out. They sense when the tide is turning in terms of the effectiveness of a coach and in Langer's case, how mentally taxing it is.

CA are probably going to have to cop the PR wack from the 90s/00s brigade, and given how piss poorly they handled the Jamie Mitchell thing, they're probably not that well set up to get through it.

eh I don't theoretically have a problem with the players largely being responsible for themselves, "lunatics running the asylum" if you will. They're grown adults with a lot of cricket experience and I don't think Langer is much better anyway tbh

However Burgey's point does have legs with this particular group of players. They are a pretty weak and insipid bunch, nothing like the Taylor, Waugh, Healy, Boon, Warne core group from the 90s
