Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
Quite a few have.
Him not having fifers in SENA is a fact. And yeah, I watched India's series in SA and England that I referred to before, as well as India in Australia and against NZ this year. I have seen Ashwin bowl and I have seen his improvement. But he still has those holes in his record to fill. I was only responding to earlier posters trying to defend him as an ATG bowler based solely on his current record.

Slow down statsgurushakerz....

Please point out who said he was already an ATG bowler here first, before we waste time debating your nonexistent argument.

That was my impression when posters pushed back on my claim that his home record alone was insufficient to be an ATG. Also think 1-2 mentioned it in the beginning. But it would be easier to tell if there was a poll.

Yeah like post 2015 SENA, I am sure.

You can keep excusing every good performance as a spinning pitch or weak opposition when people who have actually watched the games know it was neither. I mean, if an ATG can be someone who relied on bottle tops and cheating umpires, I feel someone who actually performed and won games at home with neutral umpires and no ball tampering is definitely an ATG. And a better one.

Ashwin's away average is 31. Waqar's away average is 25. Waqar is an ATG pacer without any qualifications IMO.
Murali's away average in 28 but he is definitely rated higher than Waqar.

Can't do a one on one comparison between a Spinner's average and a Pacer's, both have different utilities.

A spinner taking 7-140 is way better than a Pacer taking 1-20 even though averages are still same. On certain tracks if you don't pick a spinner your team won't be able to get the opponent all out.

Pacers deal in deathblows, Spinners are like slow poison (except on rank turners).

I think we should forget that fast bowlers exist when we rate Spinners, otherwise we will always underrate them.

On flat tracks like SCG,, Srilankan and UAE tracks you just can't bowl the other team out if you don't have a spinner, even though they might average the same as fast bowlers but they take more wickets.
