I see that India have rested a bunch of their players from the series including Pant, Bumrah, Rohit and Shami.

This is a huge opportunity for NZ. I really hope we get our preparation right because we have the team to cause an upset.

That's pretty disrespectful, and NZ need to respond with a crushing victory or they'll go down in my rankings tbh.

You could build a handy team from people rested/not touring/injured

Conway
Rohit
-
Kohli (missing test 1)
-
Pant (wk)
CdG
-
Shami
Boult
Bumrah

Lol where in the world would that attack alone rank?

Young is a better stand-in than most of the openers we've had over the last two decades - we know he doesn't like that corridor of uncertainty/lbwness if there's seam movement around, but there may or may not be in India. How he'll go against spin in India is anyone's guess - I usually have zero expectation for any first-time batting tourist of the subcontinent.
Bumrush’s absence will help Young to sleep better, though Sharma could still pose a pretty serious threat to his gargantuan pads.

Probably the best chance the kiwis have ever had to win a test series in India.

Maybe India is hoping that NZ might also have Australia's weakness against C sides. Big disrespect. I hope new Zealand crush them.

**** me the Conway injury's annoying. Just watched the punch of the bat again, and he didn't seem bothered as he was walking off. Probably adrenaline.

Metacarpal fractures typically heal in 6-8 weeks, so let's hope he's back by the new year.

Obvious choice.

I'd actually have Mitchell in the 11. 2 seamers, Ajaz + Sommerville, with Mitch at 6 bowling up to 10 overs of mediums per day.

Fair selection and although he's done really well so far, not sure if he is better than the batters we already have on the tour for test cricket. I don't expect to see him play. Forerunner should be Ravindra followed by Santner for no.6/no.7 Young should be a straight swap for Conway.

As for Indian squad, still a very formidable one. Agarwal, KL, Pujara, Gill, Rahane, Saha, Jadeja, Ashwin, Axar/Jayant, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav/Siraj is quite a good side in home conditions. Whatever happened to Sundar? He was sensational in Aussie. The lad can bat and bowl.

Injured, has been since the England tour. Was supposed to make a comeback recently but haven't heard anything.

Impossible to justify not playing one of Wagner or Jamieson.

Jamieson swings the ball both ways from height with good control. He learned to adapt to the duke and english conditions. He clearly has tremendous desire, and has the wood over the Indian batsmen.

Wagner is the equivalent if a workhorse spinner and also has developed his game significantly.

What is the point in 10 overs of medium pace or 20 overs of spinners who wouldn't even make the Indian domestic teams?

One spinner - Ajaz or Somerville, take your pick.

One allrounder. Ravindra or Mitchell, take your pick.

Just don't split up Southee, Wagner and Jamieson.

I’m surprised Mitchell wasn’t originally in the squad … but yeah, I see him as competing with Ravindra (and Santner I guess) for that all rounder spot.

Pretty sure we’ll be playing two spinners and two of Southee/Wagner/Jamieson though, which is where Mitchell might get a shot as a third non-spin option that bats. Otherwise that tail is starting to look very long.

These are three of the absolute best bowlers in the world. Yes, conditions matter. But all three of them have shown propensity to be adaptable, and while Jamieson might be less proven, surely he's more proven than any of our spinners.

Tim Southee - third highest rank test bowler in the world.
Neil Wagner - fifth highest rank test bowler in the world, our most reliable bowler when nothing is happening and offers a point of difference
Kyle Jamieson - Test bowling average of 14.17. Averaging a ridiculous 13 vs India.

Yes, we should pick a spinner. Yes, we should probably play an allrounder too. But those 3 bowlers simply have to play.
