Question on ban announcements

GIMH

Norwood's on Fire
Pretty disappointed that everyone's jumping to the defence of a dreadful post on some technicality. It would be offensive if anyone else had posted it but sledger has done this plenty of times and several subcontinent posters here aren't comfortable with it at all. And I'm convinced he knows it. Continuing to do it purely to get a rise out of the subcontinent contingent is needlessly cruel. Probably our fault partly for letting it go on the past because I think it contributed to the feeling that we agreed it was harmless trolling. Couldn't be further from the truth. also personally don't think his apology was sincere either for whatever it's worth and judging by the laugh emojis on the post others didn't either. Trying to sift through sledgers posts trying to assess what is sincere and what's hilarious knee slap worthy trolling is a futile exercise.

I'm honestly baffled by GIMH getting this angry despite him agreeing the post was dire? Surely if you're in agreement that posters getting pissed off reading that post was fair, you shouldn't be taking potshots at trundler like this. Dude is clearly hurt by sledgers posting.

Anyway I'm sure some of you will be thinking 'how rich' coming from me, I've made bad edgy posts in the past. There's plenty I've posted that I regret. I hope sledger does regret it and stops doing it because having a pages long discussion about how a ban for a post with pretty clear racist undertones isn't how I thought this thread would go. A ban was long overdue and I have very little sympathy for him.
Don’t think anyone is defending it.

I just felt the ban was overlong. Others disagree and that’s fine.

Cribbage was correcting the record, because the distinction is important, even if it’s still offensive. I think so anyway.

None of us think sledger is racist but he does habitually dabble it in at opportune moments to piss people off. If he stops that, there's no beef but the insinuation that him finally copping a ban for it is was a result of some conspiracy orchestrated by a lynch mob is hilarious.

sledger is a great guy and we have private conversations from time to time

him baiting sachin fans and indian cricket fans in cc is objectively funny but idk why he chose to go in this direction in this instance

i can see myself saying **** like this as well and later realize how it would look to other people who read it

honestly i don't care about the ban length because i was banned for far longer for making a harmless multi and we should be eating the mods in a just world but that is not the point atm. also, this is about me me me like everything else that happens here

don't think sledger is even slightly racist but he's been trying too hard to be funny and get a reaction. hope he continues to be a troll when he comes back but stays away from this type of trolling or attempting jokes that involves race into things that might get misinterpreted

I want to share some thoughts as a poster and not in my capacity as a moderator.

This is not the first time or tenth time a racist comment like that was made about people from the sub-continent for laughs. Maybe I am hyper sensitive but CW has been a safe space for me for over a decade and a lot of times, when I unexpectedly come across a post like that, regardless of how many times it has happened before or who is posting it, it makes me a combination of angry and sad for several hours after. I wonder if the person posting that who has interacted so well with me personally over the years has always really looked at me deep down like this as well.

I then feel like it is not worth going through such emotions over just an internet forum and I shouldn't post anymore. It makes me feel like I don't belong at all. There are times when I feel like this but keep posting the same day, out of pure spite, just so the racist comment hasn't chased me away. Sometimes I just take a long break. This is all emotionally exhausting over a ****ing internet forum. I say this as someone who has been posting here for over a decade and consider several posters here 'friends' so I can't imagine what someone more new and naive goes through.

If the goal of posts like that is to wind people from the SC up, they are a resounding success beause it winds me the **** up. However, I genuinely don't understand how anyone would want to subject their worst enemy to the above experience, let alone do it so gleefully. Again, I don't think the posters who make posts like that are inherently racist or bad people per se, I've had many great personal conversations with them. I just hope they realize that there are emotional consequences to comments like that over time and they put some names and faces to people who are subject to the comments the next time they are tempted to be edgy.

Great post. As someone who has been racially abused in person many times, seeing blokes who I think are good eggs say those type of things does trigger certain emotions from those past experiences. Maybe for you guys it's something to laugh over off fora but for a lot of people it feels like being abused.

Okay genuine questions to the mods.

would the ban have been longer had he not taken the post down himself?

Maybe I’m old school but I’ve always felt self acknowledgement you were wrong counts for something. It’s why I thought a month might have been the right outcome

I too only just found out what the offending post was, definitely agree it was pretty dire

Just can't believe people are defending one members internet tough guy act though. The follow up posts being so pissy makes it clear that said member was solely trying to get in a shitfight

Bin him

I'm quite disappointed that sledger saw it fit to make that post, but also disappointed that, regardless of the merits of such arguments, the immediate reaction has been to argue for a lesser ban, blame mob mentality and to clarify sledger's position for him, instead of trying to understand that the post in question likely only came about because things that people have been upset and complaining about for ages have been allowed to go on for too long.

You even have burgey in here saying what sledger said was accurate while guys like duffer, teja and trundler are in the same thread saying this **** affects them on a personal level. I don't know if it's irrational or I'm being too sensitive or whatever but it makes me feel like not posting here anymore tbh.

I apologise for the mob mentality comment as that was baseless.

I do think that the ban is too long, largely because of immediate contrition being showed, but apologise to you, duffer, Teja, OS etc if any of my comments have caused offence to you today, because I love all of you guys,
