I think we just gotta concede to the better team here. It is always fun to talk strategy and selection but the fact is that Ashwin in for Umesh and he needs to make up three first-innings wickets (of the first six) and in for Thakur and he needs to make a 50.
And similarly regarding length - this is a good point but Thakur is just not good enough when it doesn't swing and India's attack is just nowhere near as good as Jimmy, Robinson and Woakes in these conditions.
Just turned on. This is why I wanted Pope in (at 6, fortunately the nightwatchman moved him to his ideal position). I also wanted Livingstone over Ali, but won’t be bothered at all if Ali gets a score and 27 is already a reasonable contribution in the context on the game. Hopefully he can get 40+. Two men set with Woakes and Robinson to come England ought to be eyeing a 100+ lead, but it can change very fast with a wicket (or two). Bairstow got 30 odd as I expected, slightly disappointed Malan didn’t manage to kick on.

We can only play 4 bowlers if Ashwin replaces Jadeja. Otherwise it weakens the batting too significantly.

Ha - not at all. I just think it was worth a punt. But this is men vs boys. This is just 2014 and 2018 rolled into one. I hate so much that India can never win or draw a Test series in England all the way since 2007. So depressing.
