The Inaugural World Test Championship

I don't really support the WTC concept as it is, but I kind of love the idea of the Lords final. Moving it from there would just make even less interested in it.

With Covid, you couldn't have it at Lord's though could you?

Totally agree. But if it's Australia v NZ, would rather it be at the Basin Reserve. Perhaps because of Covid, whoever finishes 1 has their choice of destination.

I assume this is subject to a 2-0 NZ series win though. Do you know what needs to happen if it finished 1-0 or 1-1?
Yep, if NZ lose the 2nd test they’d be stuck with a .6 average. 1-0 would mean a .63 average. In either scenario I think the only way for NZ to qualify is if Australia lose the current series v India and then get beaten by South Africa (will require at least a 2-0 defeat if NZ lose to Pakistan).

Thanks for that

Doesn't even feel like a Championship, just another glorified version of bilateral fixtures.
I think it gives a lot more meaning to the Test game. Kane Williamson said post-match that his reasoning for the sporting declaration was to go for the win required for the Test Championship points. I wonder if it wasn't for the championship, whether he might have batted a bit longer to ensure they didn't lose.

If the idea is to play a championship, I'd be more in favour of having 2 groups where each team play each other within the group and whoever top the groups play the final. At the moment it makes no sense how the bilaterals are played randomly without any form of structure or logic and play a final at the end as an afterthought.

It started off pretty cleanly IMO (copied below from Wikipedia), but Covid of course happened and that went out the window.

"It features nine of the twelve Test playing nations,[4][5] each of whom will play a Test series against six of the other eight teams. Each series consists of between two and five matches, so although all teams will play six series (three at home and three away), they will not play the same number of Tests. Each team will be able to score a maximum of 120 points from each series and the two teams with the most points at the end of the league stage will contest the final.[6] In the case of a draw or a tie in the final, the two teams playing the final will be declared joint champions.[6] "

Aus and NZ will both play 5 series for 600 available points so no need to worry about % for these two. It's just a matter of who has the most points.

NZ currently has 360 points with one Test to play vs Pak. A win gives them 420, a Draw 380 and a loss keeps them at 360.

Aus currently has 322 points with 2 Tests vs India (up to 60 pts with W-30, D-10) and 3 Tests vs SA (up to 120 pts with W-40, D-13)

Best case scenario is NZ lose to Pak and Aus win 2-1 vs India. SA series is then a dead rubber :)

Now that NZ have beaten Pak, they are in the final unless both Australia and India get the following minimum results after the Aus-Ind series

Aus vs Ind (4)
Aus v SA (3)
Ind vs Eng (4)
3-1
1-2
4-0
2-1
1-0 or 2-1
4-0
2-2
2-1
3-1
1-2
2-0
2-0 or 3-1
1-3
3-0
2-2

* Eng can technically go above NZ but would need to win 2-0 vs SL and 3-0 vs Ind
