of course it’s all for naught if their bats roll over however it looks like their bowlers have given them a chance, time to show what they’re made of

I wonder what the retrospective test batting rankings were like for that period? I know Hadlee was number one almost unbeaten for a decade, so they must be out there.

My take on it is Williamson overtook him a little while ago ...
There were actually rankings back then. I think they started late 80s. Were the Deloittes Ratings. Which eventually ICC absorbed officially 15 or 20 years later.

E.g. Vengsarker was number 1 back in 1988. Etc. These were printed in the monthly cricket magazines.

I dont think Crowe was ever number 1 at a particular moment.

The 10 year period obviously too long for the ranking algorithms..
