World XI

Who would be in your World XI? With the Super Series coming up we'll see a Best of the Rest XI, but what would a World XI look like with the Australians available?

Here's mine

Justin Langer
Andrew Strauss
Brian Lara
Ricky Ponting
Jacques Kallis
Andrew Flintoff
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Shaun Pollock
Glenn McGrath
Matthew Hoggard

Hoggard's selection may be controversial, but he has been the best swing bowler in the world over the past year or so. Polly is also lucky to make it, but being a South African I'm naturally biased 8-)
What do you guys reckon? What do your World XIs look like?

Justin Langer
Varinder Sehwag
Ricky Ponting (c)
Rahul Dravid
Brian Lara
Jaques Kallis
Adam Gilchrist (k)
Shane Warne
Jason Gillespie
Shoaib Akhtar
Glenn McGrath
12th Man: Brett Lee

Can't see justification for including Strauss over one of the form players of the world in Sehwag, and Hoggard ahead of Gillespie is a poor decision as well. Pollock makes a good case against Shoaib, but I think that Shoaib's extra pace would assist with breakthroughs alongside McGrath and Gillespie's accuracy, and the batting is good enough without Pollock. Brett Lee is unquestionably the most consistent 12th man in the world today. :p

And while people will probably jump on me for including Shoaib over Kasprowicz or Hoggard, despite his personality problems it is worth remembering that he has averaged under 20 since 2000 along with only McGrath and Murali, and his strike rate in that time is simply phenomenal and sits in the low 30s. When he plays, he plays well. If Shoaib isn't available due to his injury (which I believe he is recovered from now, hence the inclusion), Kasprowicz comes in.

This team is picked on form, obviously.

edit: somehow forgot Dravid. Flintoff misses out.

I like that Glen McGarth at number 10 :D . For me Gillespie and Murali would make that side pretty easierly, drop Pollock and Hoggard. Tendulkar, Dravid and Shewag would have a case. Shewag easier in front of Strauss, the best opening batsmen in the world at present. Dravid is also the best batsmen in the world at present so u proably have to drop Flintoff or Kallis. My pick would be Flintoff as im playing two spinners so Flintoff better bowling would get him infront. This would be my side:

V Shewag
J Langer
R Dravid
B Lara/S Tendulkar
R Ponting (c)
A Gilchrist (wk)
A Flintoff
S Warne
J Gillespie
M Muralitharan
G McGarth

No Symonds? No Afridi? No Ponting?

I'd drop Tendulkar, Pietersen and Hodge and include the above.

Combined World ODI side

WORLD XI:

1.Adam Gilchrist +
2.Sachin Tendulkar
3.Ricky Ponting *
4.Brian Lara
5.Rahul Dravid
6.Andrew Symonds
7.Andrew Flintoff
8.Shaun Pollock
9.Brett Lee
10.Muttiah Muralitharan
11.Glenn McGrath

Unlucky to miss out Bond, Akhtar, Kallis, Inzamam

NOTE: Selection were made on mainly on overall career performances, while current form played a minor role in selection. The only exception is the selection of Symonds over probably Cairns (since we have to work on the illusion that if a match with these players we to be organised, Cairns current form would rule him out).

Vettori for Pollock. I know you have gone mainly on overall performance but applying the same logic you did in selecting Symonds over Cairns, Vettori would come in for Pollock.

International Vice-Captain
1.Adam Gilchrist +
2.Marcus Trescothick
3.Sachin Tendulkar
4.Brian Lara
5.Ricky Ponting
6.Andrew Symonds
7.Andrew Flintoff
8.Shaun Pollock
9.Shane Bond
10.Muttiah Muralitharan
11.Glenn McGrath

I'm currently in love with Shane Bond after seing him for the first time so there's no place for Lee.
Trescothick comes in for Dravid as a specialist opener because he is consistent.

Banger is more brutal in the first 15 overs (or 10, then 5 then the next five new rules blah blah) than Sachin. Tbh one can't have a world ODI side without Tres surely??

No way I'd include Lara, personally. Something like...

Adam Gilchrist
Sachin Tendulkar
Jacques Kallis
Ricky Ponting
Inzamam-Ul-Haq
Andrew Flintoff
Andrew Symonds
Daniel Vettori
Brett Lee
Glenn McGrath
Muttiah Muralitharan

Could also bring in Dravid for say Kallis and put him at 4... Inzy's place wouldn't be a certainty either, and Gayle for Sachin is also possible.
