It is just that you start batting differently based on your position, especially in ODIs which gives you time to overthink, unlike Tests or T20s where usually the "how" is clearer. I am seeing somewhere that Labu is slated to bat 3 and Smith at 4 in the Aussie line up. That would be just as silly too, I feel. And I love me some Marnus.
Yeah I think TPC should bat three as long as he’s in the ODI side tbh. Side looked much better in the games during the WC when he batted there. That or open, which I reckon he’d actually be aweslme at because he hits gaps so well, but it won’t happen with warner and finch there.

That’s real strife now. India a chance to be bowled out here. Where’s Pandya though? Genuine gun imo

Yeah, our batting and bowling line ups will always be hard to figure out for ODIs given all our good batsmen don't bowl and all our good bowlers don't bat. You have groom people. Pandya is out injured and this would have been the perfect time to blood someone like Sundar in this set up. And maybe batting allrounders like Suryakumar Yadav. This is not the place to continue the merry-go-round of the openers and #4 when we have already settled on them.

social - Cummins is the world's best bowler

Also social - If Kohli struggles against Cummins, it's embarrassing

Thakur’s selection suddenly makes sense
Only if his batting isn't a complete myth, which I suspect it is. He's averages 16 in FC cricket and 13 in List A cricket. He played a cameo in one of his ODIs but I think his batting is more Umesh than Bhuvi, which makes "he was picked for lower order batting" to be even more of a joke than the assertion that he can bowl (he cannot).

I realise I've set him up for a fighting 40 and 4fa now but the whole thing is pretty weird.

Our ODI side should be the least of our concerns for now and if we are intent on playing Rohit and Kohli in JAMODIs then at least ensure they are playing in their best positions. If experimentation is the name of the game, drop both, let Dhawan captain and try other players.

Openers - 2 of Rohit/Dhawan/Rahul - other sits out
#3 - Kohli- If rested, play Manish Pandey.
#4 - Shreyas Iyer - just starting his career. Only plays white ball for India. Need not be rested.
#5 - Keeper - Pant, for now. give him the year and see how he goes. Don't mess around his position unless really called for.
#6,7 - All-rounders and Finishers - Jadeja, Sundar, Dubey, Shankar, Suryakumar Yadav - try 2 of them till Pandya comes back.
#8,9 - Bowlers who can bat - Shardul, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvi (when fit), Unadkat, Shreyas Gopal can be tried.
#10,11 - Wicket taking bowlers - Bumrah, Shami, Saini, Kuldeep, Chahal - Pick based on conditions and rest of the side.

Its really not that hard.

He’s played some decent cameos in the IPL according to Manjrekar on comms. Certainly looks better than Umesh at least lol.

I think if Ash Agar is bowling maidens to you at this stage of an ODI then you need to retire

He averages 7 in that with a HS of 22. Like Umesh he could be useful slogging a few in the last 10 balls or something but I see no real evidence for him being much better than that.

People do seem to think he can bat but that's why I think "myth" is more fitting than "spud".
