I don't think people realise just how bad Guptill's been in recent years. Against the top teams (Eng, Ind, Aus, SA) he's been averaging in the teens since that 180 odd all the way back in 2017. Really don't see how that's acceptable, especially after his dismal World Cup effort.
Yep, he's on a pretty short leash as far as I'm concerned, and I don't really have any confidence he'll turn it around. He just doesn't look likely these days, he's been a long way from his best for ages. Would love to see the selectors be proactive and try out some new options.

Do we have a chance of beating you in a 2 test series at least this time? Will Latham be out till that series?
this is probably the most suited side you've brought to nz. a lot will depend on how you adapt. since 2008 england have shown up bowling a foot too short and blamed everything but themselves. for the batsmen there's the swing and potentially the tennis ball type bounce.

you should probably try and troll nz into preparing greentops tbh since it will allow your bois to play on the front foot and reduce the error for your bowlers in case they do an england.

you're flat out way better than england in all departments though so yea india are one of the few sides i give the side eye when touring here.

With an eye to the future and the 2023 WC how do you think our test and ODI line ups might look?

Test
Conway
Latham
Williamson
Young
Nicholls
Ravindra
Blundell
Jamieson
Ferguson
Sears
Boult

ODI
Conway
Phillips
Williamson
Young/Nicholls
Seifert
Neesham
Ravindra
Santner
Jamieson
Ferguson
Boult
Entirely depends on how the India series goes and the India A. If our current locked in players like Guptill, Munro, Nicholls etc show some good form the introduction of the likes of Phillips, Seifert, Ravindra playing full time will be delayed. Young will make the team first up on the basis of his excellent season last year. Conway will definitely make the team there's no doubt about that when he becomes available. Phillips and Seifert will be likely in and out. Ravindra won't be picked up, we are way too conservative to introduce younger players. Ravindra will likely become a regular feature in about couple of years time. From the way he's gone on he seems to become a very important cog in every team he plays given he bats as good as he bowls but for him to get in the team will take time.

India had quality cricketers even on the last trip but as soon as couple of games didn't go their way they almost appeared disinterested. Maybe now Kohli is at helm and given the championship points are up for grabs they may come better prepared. Wellington deck offers good bounce and movement but the wind can be a major factor. It can put off your guys big time. This is one of the reason why India has always struggled at Basin. The wind will be howling and there are bound to be a day of dodgy weather if not two. If India bat on those days it's anyone's game. If there is not as much wind then Indian bowlers may have some good time. Our boys know to acclimatize to these conditions. I'm not sure how many of your bowlers will have bowled at Basin. I know for sure Ishant Sharma did and picked up good number of wickets before Baz went ballistic in the second dig. It will be very hard to breach Black Caps at Basin. It will take mighty effort both from your batters and bowlers to win a game at Basin. Spinners are not a factor at basin so no matter what spinner you play won't necessarily have much effect. Fortunately for us, you are playing your first test match at Basin 8-)

Hagley is where India has better chance. The ground is good sized, there won't be as much bounce as at Basin and Christchurch will likely offer much better weather that will suit India. Perhaps the spinner will also come into play at Hagley rather than at Basin. In any case the spinner's role is going to be quite limited.

Also depends on how many players in fact play all formats. More the merrier for India to get used to the conditions. If there are test specialists coming in just before the test match, the three day warm up match will be of no use to those players. If the test team is made up of 80% of players playing all format I think India will have a chance otherwise it's either NZ 1-0 or 1-1 at best for India.

India squad for T20s vs NZ.

Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC), KL Rahul, S Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (WK), Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, W Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Navdeep Saini, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur

Strong batting line up but not sure if the bowling is good enough. To be fair I haven't followed Indian cricket much and don't know much about Saini, Thakur Sundar much. I don't rate Pant much. What happened to Samson? He's a much better wicket keeper batsman I thought having seen him in IPL few times.

When is our squad going to be announced? Are we waiting for the super smash to finish? They should give guys that have performed well in the super smash a go if they are good enough quality. What do you guys make of McConchie? Can he make the cut?

Phillips
Rutherford
Kane
Seifert
Tom Bruce/Taylor
Mark Chapman
Jimmy Neesham
Santner
Jamieson
Southee
Bennett

Unless Boult is available for selection.

Fresh look team and decent in all department.

Don't know what I was thinking... I had left out Neesh from the above.

Nah, give Boult a rest. Go in with Southee, Tickner, Jamieson and Bennett as squad seamers. I like the cut of Mitchell's jib and he could fill the A/R role with Neesh. Santner and Sodhi for the spin roles.

You lot actually think they are going to pick Bennett? That's cute.

Seriously though, I would like to see him be tried but it seems pretty obvious he isn't liked by the selection panel for whatever reason

Did get the World Cup warm-ups against Australia in May. Didn't look rapid but the figures were fine.

Anyone know when Foxcroft is eligible?
Not sure. I know his friends and fellow Pretorians Ludick and Evan Jones definitely started the three-year process in January 2017. Foxcroft began playing for Taradale in 2016/17, but it would depend on when his own letter of intent went in.

i don'tthink any of foxcroft, ludick and co. are gonna make it tbh. wagner and conway are a level above.

also article i read yesterday seemed to imply stead would pick his best side possible for the t20 series, so i can see precious kane and ross energy getting wasted.

Stead has to otherwise he won't last long enough. They have to pick their best side to momentarily erase the bad Aussie memory. I'm not expecting any surprises for the India tour. Maybe later in the year but for now they will go with status quo.

Yes I can also be sceptical of the more porcine-looking bats who get their careers off to a very fast start (say Craig McMillan or Craig Cachopa), but a 21-year-old averaging 76 and a SR of 140 in our domestic T20 isn't a very common thing. Also kept Central Districts from being a complete caricature of their pace-loving selves with that 60-odd on a slow and holding pitch in a tense and consequential game (last season's final). There's really no one else his age in our white ball cricket who's proven he's got that knock in him.

the head coach should do what is best for nz, not what is best for his own skin.

you're overestimating the impact of losing a silly t20 series. the casuals will be sad if we lose the odis, but it's our test game that is being examined. everything lies on that.

just looked him up and didn't realise he averaged 41 with the bat in t20. his other batting averages need a boost, though i notice an amusing 16 w @ 15 with the ball in the shield.

i've seen him bat and he looks fine but not outstanding and i like to see red ball runs even from limited overs guys, however i didn't realise he was only 21 which changes things. plenty of time to improve.

Yes, that was an impressive innings under pressure by Foxcroft. He looks pretty solid in the Plunket Shield snippets I've seen, even when facing a pumped up Sears. I suspect he will be challenging for higher honours over the next couple of seasons.
