The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

With AB, Amla, Steyn, Morkel etc all having retired relatively recently, it's quite interesting to work out an all-time SA XI.

1. Richards
2. Smith (c)
3. G. Pollock
4. Kallis
5. de Villiers.
6. Faulkner
7. Boucher
8. Proctor
9. Steyn
10. Donald
11. Tayfield

Other players worth consideration:
Mitchell
Nourse
Amla
Pollock

Nourse for Faulkner might be more balanced but I cna't leave Faulkner out.

In Imran's peak 5 year spell as a bowler (late 1981-86), he averaged 44.96 batting and 14.24 bowling.

I'd pick Hutton at first-choice opener: from 1948/9 to 1953/4 he average 71.02.

Other batting contenders (besides those picked and Ponting) include Walcott (averaged 81 in the mid-50s) and Richards (averaged 75 in 76-81).
god imrans batting stats are so meme worthy

he scored 1 century in this time period

Mitchell for Smith is certainly one that can go either way, but the captaincy of Smith ultimately won out for me.

Lindsay for Boucher is an interesting one. I think we tend to look through rose-tinted glasses when it comes to keepers. I prefer Boucher due to his intangibles - he was the ultimate tenacious cricketer, and I think his glovework is heavily underrated relative to guys like Lindsay just because historically we have seen old-timer glovemen as > modern keepers..

Smith and Mitchell are 4th innings beasts and worth their weight in gold.

International Coach
Where would you guys rank Fred Trueman among all time great bowlers? 307 wickets at an average of 21 and SR of 47 is very impressive.
Marshall
McGrath
Steyn
Muralitharan
Warne
Hadlee
Ambrose
Trueman
O'Reilly
Lillee
Donald
Akram / Imran
Barnes
Davidson / Garner

Rough estimate of my top 15.

This was the people's choice:

1. BA Richards
2. GC Smith *
3. JH Kallis
4. RG Pollock
5. AB de Villiers
6. AD Nourse
7. MJ Procter
8. JHB Waite +
9. HJ Tayfield
10. DW Steyn
11. AA Donald
Yeah this looks fair, I'd still prefer Boucher as I think he's underrated due to the recency of his career.

It's a travesty not having Faulkner in an ATG SA team but Nourse is probably better for the team on balance.

a massive zebra

International Captain
Hardly the best batsman of his era because his career overlapped fairly closely with Jack Hobbs who was streets ahead, but Taylor was certainly the best African batsman of his time.

Boucher is overrated due to his long career. He was a great servant of the game and SA cricket but not really that special as a batsman, and definitely not as a keeper.
