The story that stuck with me the most was from my 30yo boss who was saying that it wasn't too bad over there. After all, she'd only ever been held up at gunpoint twice while stopped at traffic lights.

Twice in at most a decade (she'd been here for a few years at that stage)!
For what it's worth, in over 30 years of living in South Africa I haven't been held up at gunpoint once.

Same. Despite the confirmation bias media frenzy, most suburban crime rates are pretty reasonable. Of course if you decide to visit Manenberg you're on your own...

Yeah it is a tough call. You dont want to belittle someone who has experienced something bad. But if you go by some sources you would swear there are running gun battles everywhere you go.

It's true though that the murder rates in Capetown and Johannesburg are some of the highest in the world. It's also true that the South Africans provably talk up the danger like Aussies do our wildlife.

It's weird when people say things like "I live in SA and never been victim of crime" or "I live in Australia and never been attacked by a poisonous animal" as if it's particularly relevant.

I don't think anyone's claiming that crime in SA happens to everyone, all the time, or that everyone in Australia is constantly poisoned by animals. It's just a higher significantly proportion than many other places, hence why it's a thing. You don't need every single person in Johannesburg to be murdered for it to have a higher than average crime rate ffs

There's a reason people with enough money in South Africa build their houses behind giant walls.

Ashamed of their complicity in a cynical socio-economic system based on loving accumulation of property and ruthless exploitation of people? Or just covering their own donkeys because the system won't help them

Does that reason carry over to other countries where rich people build houses with walls round their grounds or are you just spouting shite to meet your predetermined views?

Here's the thing, overall murder rates are high, particularly in Cape Town. BUT, Langa, Mannenburg and a few other gangland areas account for a hugely disproportionate amount of those.

Afraid that if they get burgled and they're home at the time they'll get raped and killed as well.

"Enough money" in South Africa is basically anyone who is middle class.

Look, I'm only going on what the dozen or so emigrants tell me. From my plumber to my colleagues both present and former. I haven't lived there myself.

The real question stephen, is are any of them nice?
They're all really lovely people. If it's what you meant, they're mostly blokes but the one woman was smoking hot.

Also got to know a few Saffers while I worked for a South African company and they were similarly all nice (boss excepted) and all basically told the same story. You live in gated communities to protect yourself from rape/ theft/ murder.

Admittedly they were from Johannesburg.
