Till Glenn Chapple got his hands on himHe was being talked of alongside Gubbins but a lot of people threw all their eggs in the Hammed basket. Hameed was going to be ''the saviour'' of us all, wasn't he?
Was he? I genuinely don't recall anyone pushing Burns' case two years ago, but I may have forgotten. It would be interesting to know when he moved up from the middle order too. I don't think it was all that long ago.He was being talked of alongside Gubbins but a lot of people threw all their eggs in the Hammed basket. Please don't tell me you're seriously questioning theegyptian's knowledge of the county game. Just because he's pointed out some facts that don't don't fit your over the top crusade.Either you aren’t big on cricket or this is a Burns thing for you.
Not like this season (where he has basically forced the selectors' hand, and there is literally nobody else) but I remember his name being floated around alongside Gubbins - certainly. Was he? Averaging 24 is a vast improvement on Jennings.I have no real faith in Burns actually forging a long-term Test career but hey, given the options available he's worth a crack. SL might not be an awful place for him to debut, either.
He's the kind of bloke who I can see averaging 40 after a long, long FC career but averaging 24 in a fairly short Test one. So basically every 90s England opener not named Gooch, Atherton or Stewart.
If the selectors had seen sense on Jennings we wouldn't have been relegatedAveraging 24 is a vast improvement on Jennings.
Probably right there. He should never have been recalled anyway as it was clear he isn't good enough. If the selectors had seen sense on Jennings we wouldn't have been relegated
I over-reacted to this last time. My bad. Dunno. Perhaps I was tired (and pissed at the ECB). It’s not your fault. The ECB has pissed me off with their Jennings/Burns situation. It’s not you. We have to go with Burns. Everyone else is painfully inferior as an option.Well he had solid results without being spectacular until this year. I mean Sangakarra averaged twice what Burns did last year at Surrey, Stoneman 10 more than Burns. I don't think Burns has ever topped the Surrey averages.
Last timeEngland have got a massive head ache for choosing the xi in the first test in the windies. Do they go;
3 seamers + stokes 1 spinner + root
Or
2 seamers + stokes 2 spinners
And how do they get Curran back in the side.
I would personally go for the 2nd option with leach and Ali both in the team
Burns
Jennings
Bairstow
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes
Ali
Broad
Leach
Anderson
I still don't like Jennings but he isn't going to be dropped now after he tonned up in the first test and his fielding at short leg
Think he is more concerned about playing again full stop not his England place. But how rough has it been on TRJ? Handy in his few appearances, does his back, misses the Ashes, does his back again, misses the season. Next minute he's about 12th choice quick.
Would imagine he will be part of the squads for Windies tour now then. Could well come from nowhere and claim a world cup and ashes spot.Archer available from January 1
He's certainly good enough to be in the ODI squad and team.
6 months before a WC in which they are favourites with/ or without Archer it's going to be interesting to see how they fit him in/or not. They've spent the last 3 and 1/2 years planning and building for the WC, all the players know their roles. Backroom staff know all the players temperaments.
It does risk changing the teams equilibrium.
However they have bowlers like Wood, Willey, Curran who will make the WC squad who are average. They've got to try and get him in there imo.
