Dunno how Sanath is a better option to Gilchrist unless we give huge importance to bowling few overs of darts (which can be useful but these AT teams always have a genuine all rounder who can do ten overs easy) or shooting ameture pornography.

The team now has five legitimate bowlers.

Please select your two players to fill the 5 and 6 spots. The two players with the most votes will go into those spots.

ODIs are largely about runscoring or outscoring the opposition in limited overs.

So scoring-wise, this is an invincible batting line imo. Whether it's setting a target or chasing one, this batting side cannot be outdone, especially with all 3 of the greatest runchasers playing together, in Dhoni, Bevan and Kohli. Run chasing which has historically been difficult will never be so with this lot.

5th bowler role is not as essential in ODIs as its made out to be and Jayasuriya can fulfil it pretty adequately. Plus there's Tendulkar and Richards there too who can both bowl alright and have 100s of wickets themselves.

Viv has 118 wickets in 131 innings at 4.4 Eco. Tendulkar has 150+ wickets and he was genuinely decent but faded away completely in his 30s. So these 3 guys can easily get the 10+ overs through, if not Jayasuriya alone.

2015 - Watson and Maxwell

2011 - Yuvraj

2007 - Watson, Symonds and Clarke

2003 - Symonds and Lehmann

1999 - Moody (plus Waugh and Waugh were in the team)

1996 - Waugh, Waugh and Bevan

1992 - DeSilva and Jayasuriya

1987 - O'Donnell and Border

1982 - Armanath and Azad

1979 - King and Richards

1975 - Clive Lloyd

Just for curiosity I thought I'd go thru the World Cup finals and see who were the fifth bowlers in the winning teams. Fair to say not many teams have specialist fifth bowlers, but I think there is a need to have more than one option for your fifth bowler if he's not a specialist bowler, because ten overs is a long time if he can't contain.

Fmd,

Jayasuriya 323 wickets in 368 innings at
avg 36.7
sr.. 46.0
eco 4.78

Symonds 133 wickets only in 158 innings at
avg 37.2
sr.. 44.6
eco 5.00

Viv Richards 118 wickets in 131 innings at
avg 35.8
sr.. 47.8
eco 4.49
(although eco was lower in his era too)

Who needs Symonds as the 5th bowler when you have Jayasuriya and Viv! So Jayasuriya is an undisputed starter imo if you see how big an all-rounder he is and he didn't just fluke it or something for a short period of time during his peak, he did it throughout his career and maintained such an incredible record.

And when you bring in Jayasuriya, the whole balance of the side gets sorted out and then you can gun up in batting and obliterate all opposition with your depth without fear of losing wickets. Whereas if you play Gilly and end up with just 6 batsmen including him, if a few wickets fall early, you got barely much batting left and incredibly weak tail to follow.

So in ODIs you got to have 7 quality batsmen in there, especially with the weak tail.
Otherwise, playing on a bowler friendly pitch for example could expose the depth of the lineup or in other scenarios where you ineplicably lose wickets early.

Just popped my head in to look at this. Jeez it’s a cracking side.

Are we including blokes still playing this time around?

If people are too obsessed with having a specialist 5th bowler or bowling allrounder.. then you are down to just 6 batsmen including keeper and thus you can't afford to have a risky hitter at the top in Gilly. So someone like Ponting is a far better option.

1. Ponting
2. Tendulkar
3. Kohli
4. Viv
5. De Villiers / Bevan
6. Dhoni+

Far more reliable batting line when playing with 6 batsmen.

The other option is to play Pollock-Wasim at 8 and 9 so that the tail is thin.

Serious question, Mike Hussey??

There was once a time he was Bevan-like in his ODI batsmanship.

Is he a fringe contender for lower-middle order finisher?
