Road to the 2017-18 Ashes in Australia

The Ashes doesn't need hype. It does need a higher quality of commentator to match the higher quality occasion. Unlike when three people are watching a Bangladesh series.

We'll make that in a session for the Ashes.

Besides, we were there for the big ticket team, not the home track just passables.

That is a huge loss for Sky. I hope BT provide some kind of Now TV equivalent. I actually don't mind Vaughan, I think once you peel away all the social media stuff he's a decent comments man. Punter is awesome and Swann is absolutely dire.

I have been watching the Ashes 2013/14 on YouTube to get myself in the mood. They all look so young! Especially Smith and Lyon. Smith was fielding at short leg for heaven's sake. And Faulkner was 12th man. My, how far he's fallen.

I found it refreshing watching a shield stream recently in which there was no commentary; just the sound of exotic birds tweeting and a bloke snoring. Watching Channel Nine's coverage, we usually look forward to Mark Nicholas screaming like an excited school girl whenever England loses a wicket (he loves the Aussies doesn't he, Nicholas?); Lawry's bias; Pietersen and Warne's palsmenship, discussing things like Pizza; and Clarke's whiney voice. I'd normally say we Brits do the commentary much better but we now have Swann on Test Match Special so this is becoming a more difficult act to sustain.

BT's punditry has Vaughan, Boycott and Punter apparently. I think Swann might be there also!
I can assure you, in spite of Swann, the Brits do indeed do commentary far, far better. TMS is superb and cricket on radio in Australia is C grade. I don't think it's fair to compare Sky and Nine as they are competing for and in completely different markets.

Has anyone got tickets for any of the Tests?
Yes. A five day pass to Sydney with gold member privileges. I plan getting out there early, use the gym and the pool, attend the usual breakfast soirée out back of the pavilion then leave my seat and sit in the air conditioned bar in the new Noble Stand with prawns, oysters and champagne.

It’s how we usually do it.

May have to give up a day or two as Green Shield is on at that time.

Vaughan's alright but he basically supports all of these new ECB ideas to reform cricket like four-day tests and twenty20 silliness; I cannot support the man. I still like Boycott. Yes he is a caricature - ''grumpy old 'it was better in my day' Yorkshireman - and you sense he plays up to it at times but he is hilarious when he is in one of those moods and Agnew sort of eggs him on. His opinions on England's brainless batting are spot on.

I do wonder what the Sky lot will be doing, Gower, Bumble, Beefy, Nass and Athers - the new crew of Rob Key and Nick Knight also? There is probably something in their contract which stops them from doing a bit for Channel Nine, now that BT will pick up the Nine broadcast. They'll have their newspaper stuff of course.

I wonder if Corrin will listen to the UK public broadcaster’s radio coverage, or whether he will remain true to his ideology du jour.

Beefy should be in his office in Chester-le sorting out our dog's dinner of a county side the work shyster.

I think Vaughan is pretty good when they keep him talking about the specifics of the match/series.

His opinions on how to improve cricket are generally tosh though.

I’m a fan of Ed and he’s actually a really good bloke. Very thoughtful and considered in his views on not just Cricket but on life in general. Does some great work with Not For Sale as well. But I don’t think he’s a great dressing room fit tbh, and I understand his relationship with the vice captain is allegedly toxic.
Seems like Cowan's the wrong nationality. Appears to be quite un-Australian the way MacGill was.
