Sayers doesn't fit the Aussie quick template i.e. not quick or tall enough. Also, he's an unknown quantity outside of playing for SA, never had a County gig, never played much with Aus A and generally led the SA attack so no real idea of how he'd bowl without the new nurry. Nice bloke from a lovely family, top top bowler but there are just more reasons to pick others.

I think the pace aspect is the main issue atm; certainly under Lehmann the ethos seems to be that pace and aggression are more highly prized than seamers such as Sayers (doesn't explain how Mennie got a go ahead of him though when he was fit iirc).

Mennie was great for Australia A just before selection; that got him in.

I'm not too sure how much can be read into Mennie's sole test. He certainly didn't look good and given Australia's depth he shouldn't get another go but he is probably a better bowler than what he showed in that game. Probably not international class but occasionally someone can surprise. I remember Bollinger looking awful on debut and he was a decent bowler for a while there.

The shield pitches are generally a lot more bowler-friendly that the Test pitches, so there is some merit to the line of thinking that Sayers wouldn't be as good in Tests that he is in the Shield
Mennie was the leading wicket taker in Shield cricket the previous season.
That was a good reason to pick him !

Yeah that's some serious ****. Bond had the same surgery and it was regarded as a massive success.. but he still only played eighteen Tests.
It did seem for quite a while that Cummins was the more injury-prone of the two, and that Pattinson had a better chance of having a substantial Test career -- it seems quite the opposite now. Pattinson having a few years on Cummins and still having all those similar injuries at an older age was probably a bit of a tell.

Reid had spinal fusion too, didn't elongate his career by much. But the technology has changed quite a bit since those days, even in the last 5 years there have been some pretty impressive advances. It'll take a while but it may not rule out him being quick again just yet.
Looking for a no 7 for NSW,look no further.

Tomorrow is the last day with Canterbury a chance to win the game.

Copeland,Abbott and O'keefe who's batting has declined as he has got older,have failed to make an impact the last 2/3 years,this could be a chance to blood someone and stick to a decent no 7.
