More seamish stuff, I'd have said. A bit like Philander actually.Sayers swings the ball a fair bit from what I saw - correct?
would Jimmy Anderson?Sometimes I think Marshall wouldn't make the Aussie team because he doesn't fit the mould.
First man discarded when we're at full strength IMO.would Jimmy Anderson?
I think the pace aspect is the main issue atm; certainly under Lehmann the ethos seems to be that pace and aggression are more highly prized than seamers such as Sayers (doesn't explain how Mennie got a go ahead of him though when he was fit iirc).Sayers doesn't fit the Aussie quick template i.e. not quick or tall enough. Also, he's an unknown quantity outside of playing for SA, never had a County gig, never played much with Aus A and generally led the SA attack so no real idea of how he'd bowl without the new nurry. Nice bloke from a lovely family, top top bowler but there are just more reasons to pick others.
Mennie was great for Australia A just before selection; that got him in.I think the pace aspect is the main issue atm; certainly under Lehmann the ethos seems to be that pace and aggression are more highly prized than seamers such as Sayers (doesn't explain how Mennie got a go ahead of him though when he was fit iirc).
The shield pitches are generally a lot more bowler-friendly that the Test pitches, so there is some merit to the line of thinking that Sayers wouldn't be as good in Tests that he is in the ShieldSayers doesn't fit the Aussie quick template i.e. not quick or tall enough. Mennie was the leading wicket taker in Shield cricket the previous season.I think the pace aspect is the main issue atm; certainly under Lehmann the ethos seems to be that pace and aggression are more highly prized than seamers such as Sayers (doesn't explain how Mennie got a go ahead of him though when he was fit iirc).
