Has made over 400 runs against just Hampshire. Can't have been many better examples of someone basically saving a game on their own.

Being a bowler short in the last innings has really hurt Hampshire the last two games but can't really complain but still can't be anything but very pleased with the the start to the season.

Pleasing to see Essex hold out for a draw, albeit with some assistance from the weather! Enjoyed my first ever trip to Lords yesterday to see Bopara and co. dig in to try and maintain our unbeaten start to the season.

The highlight for me was Toby Roland-Jones spell in the afternoon which was cut short for reasons I'm not fully aware of. He bowled a heavy ball and threatened with virtually every ball giving Adam Wheater and RTD a fairly torrid time. Finn looked in decent rhythmn also, if still down on pace from what we became so accustomed to.

If Mark Wood is fit, why would you not have him in the Chanmpions Trophy squad ? He offers something different to the rest of the quicks in the squad and the England management are certainly keen to include him providing he is fully fit.

because he's looked nothing more than utterly mediocre in his limited overs performances for england to date?

He's been inconsistent but I wouldn't suggest his selection has been disastrous. He's not even played a dozen ODI's yet, so I certainly think he's worth persevering with. His pace and reverse swing gives us a genuine wicket-taking option during those middle overs, something we desperately need. He won't be our most economical bowler, but like I say, he offers a bit of extra pace and something different.

Good to see England selectors giving Hampshite a kick. If I was a young English player i'd be looking to leave pronto, as they have shown they clearly don't care in the slightest about playing youngsters.

Ansari retires. I called it a year or two ago that he could retire early. Unlike most cricketers, he had more than cricket in his life. Always gave the impression in interviews that if he didn't crack it, he go off and do something different.

Don't think his selection this winter did him many favours. He didn't bowl very well last year for Surrey and had lots of injuries. Was better in 2015 before the bad finger break.

so ansari has retired.....

The 25-year-old recently made his Test debut for England, playing against Bangladesh in October 2016.

Zafar has been with Surrey CCC since the age of eight, playing in every age group within the club system. He has successfully combined his cricketing career with academic endeavours. In 2011, he was part of the Surrey squad that won the Lord’s final, whilst still studying at Cambridge University, where he achieved a Double First in Politics, Philosophy and Sociology in 2013.

Over the next five years, his cricket career progressed as he earned International honours and he was capped by Surrey in 2014.

He made his One Day International debut for England in 2015 and was named in the Test squad that winter, but was ruled out by a freak hand injury sustained whilst fielding at Old Trafford late that season.

Shortly afterwards, he began a Master’s degree in history at Royal Holloway, University of London, which he completed with a Distinction at the end of last year, combining this work with a career for Surrey in all formats and Test cricket for England.

Zafar will be leaving cricket to pursue new challenges with the very best wishes of everyone associated with Surrey County Cricket Club.

Speaking today, Zafar Ansari said: “After seven years as a professional cricketer and almost two decades in total playing the game, I have decided to bring my cricket career to an end. This has been a very difficult decision to make and I have not made it lightly. I started playing for Surrey at the age of 8 and the club has been a hugely important part of my life since then. Surrey have always completely supported me and I am extremely grateful to the club for their backing over the years. It is, therefore, with great sadness that I say goodbye.

TBF to hampshire Crane averaged in the 40s last year with the ball and alsop low 30s with the bat. I don't think they can have too many complaints based on those performances. It's still disappointing from an england perspective but Hampshire are no different from any other county.

Fact is no county is bothered about England. They all look after themselves. Yorkshire didn't think lets produce England players. No they basically had no money and had to put their faith in kids. It helps that they are pulling from a strong cricketing area, big populations etc.

Do you think it's such an extreme ? For football without a doubt.

Always felt rugby and cricket work more with national union/board in terms of planning ahead.

Got more youngsters in the side than Warwickshire.

I think Crane probably should have played the last couple of games, but I can understand why he didn't. Want leg spinners to get game time, then schedule less Championship games in April.

I think a lot of the moaning has come because Hampshire just signed better Kolpaks then other counties.

Most other counties don't have Hampshire's English talent either. Crane not playing a match, Alsop played one. Topley's played one but is obviously coming back from injury.

Anyone who got Abbott was going to focus the flak on themselves. What happened with Abbott was horrible for cricket, yes he'd have gone somewhere else if Hampshire hadn't gotten him, but ultimately Hampshire did get him.

With regards to Ansari - frankly those around the England setup and at Surrey must have a good idea it was coming and so he should never have played for England.
