Really, really soft dismissal that. Batting had been looking ridiculously easy; you won't get an easier opportunity to make a test century.

Will be interesting to see what happens if CDG gets in. Can imagine he'll be v aggressive.
Yes, hearing he was in I hastily signed up to another week of Sky's FanPass.

2000 test runs for Latham, and his average has hit 40 as well. Unless he remains not out, he needs to get to 202 for it to stay there.

3 chances in an innings of 50.

When will the selectors learn... it doesn't take this long to determine that a player doesn't belong at this level.

An average of 24 after 9 games is terrible, you can't afford to invest in players like this when you're struggling as is.

NZ Test Cricket would be better off with no Basin Reserve tests.
Wellington traffic would be better off with no Basin Reserve.

Put two and two together.
Yes, and next get rid of Lords. It's not going to happen. The Basin is a national treasure. Agree that the pitch needs to be changed though.

Latham has been almost chanceless this innings, even considering the pitch and the attack he's facing, if nothing else this innings will hopefully build that capability in his head to bat time and construct big innings repeatedly, it's the only thing (other than runs against RSA) he's missed so far, giving away too many soft dismissals.

Been good grind here, shelved a lot of the shots that would normally get him out.

Lords = Fantastic Cricketing venue.
Basin = Used solely for test cricket, doesn't even get the fans in anymore like it used to, has major issues around wind meaning that broadcast can't be guaranteed, has a **** wicket and has had for many years, and impacts Wellington's traffic.

Yes, it's "the home" of NZ Cricket, but if you look at Eden Park and how little we're starting to use it, the fact is Wellington has another stadium already that although would look terribly sparse on TV should they play test cricket there, has the potential to support cricket better in the region than the Basin does.

I realise it likely won't happen, but ultimately I see no reason to persist with the Basin, and if there were pragamatists in Wellington council, they'd see the same.

It would if they brought back the Boxing Day test. The first day of a Boxing Day test there against someone like England or India would be close to a sellout.

I love the Basin, but as a ground it's in dire need of a lot of work. The toilets are disgusting. The Vance stand is shabby and dirty. The old stand is just a blot on the ground. The ticketing facilities are average - if there's any sort of a crowd turning up you better have bought yours already or get ready for a 40 minute wait in line.

Nicolls, CdG and Santner OUT
Guptill, Neesham and Anderson IN
I'd like to see Neesham in there, but give up on Guptill - Anderson needs to get himself right to play four days or more of cricket.

Santner, nah - best spin prospect we've had since Vettori and improving match on match, the sitter he dropped here was horrible, but he's only going to get better and better with the ball, he's a long term prospect for us and a point of difference to other sides who can't produce good left arm spinners.

Hahaha, Mark Richardson was just introduced to the commentary box as "the person who doesn't like anything".

Reminds me of one of our regular posters.

Tbf, I've been watching cricket at the Basin for 25 years and Thursday was afaia the first time that the camera facilities were shut down by the wind.

We can't afford to play guys who may eventually come good, Santner offers little with bat and ball atm. He'd be better off working on his game at the domestic level before giving another run in Tests.

As for Guptill, I want to see what Guptill can do against the older ball at 5. It was poor to have him open when it's evident that he struggles to playing the moving ball.

Neesham is self explanatory, I'm surprised he isn't playing here. IIRC he scored 70 odd in the last Test he played in India, looked great while scoring those runs too.

IMO any chance of a good crowd for Saturday and Sunday in this test disappeared with the pitch and what happened on the first two days. Would have been the same at any ground.
