This is disappointing to hear. It always looks so beautiful on TV; one of the cricket grounds in the world I most want to go to. Hopefully they've fixed it up a bit by the time I get off my lazy arse and go to a Test there.
You definitely won't have a bad time or anything. The facilities definitely need to be updated.

You'd be mad to move cricket from the basin. Where would you move it to?

Gotta remember that Wellington is a very small city. It makes bugger all sense to hold test cricket at the stadium.

Disappointing end to a great innings - surely one of Latham's best knocks so far.

Where has this Shakib been? He's looking more and more threatening, great drift, getting the odd one to bite too.

Speaking of *** facilities, the Basin has nothing on the old Athletic Park in Wellington. Worst toilets I've been to at a sports ground.

Where would the Firebirds play? Not enough clear days at the Stadium this year for a NZ vs Aus ODI as it is. One of the dumbest suggestions I've heard for a long time.

Here is Santner's chance to prove you wrong I guess. The guy is a legitimately good batsman, he's just not translated it yet to first class or international cricket, but his scores at Hawke Cup and the A level province stuff shows he can turn "good looking batsmanship" into gritty scores. A good punchy fifty or so here would be a good sign he's learning with the bat.
Hopefully. He adds considerable value if he does turn into a decent batsman.

Jesus, that and Carisbrook by the end were the two worst experiences in NZ - I remember watching Rugby at Athletic Park and wondering how the **** that stadium was considered a staple of NZ Rugby - but times move on, Athletic Park has gone, Carlaw Park (home of League in NZ) has gone, I don't see why we're so protective of the Basin considering it has no room for growth and you can't really improve it much - a lot of the stadium build for instance is blocked by consent of those neighbouring the ground as it would impact their viewlines, etc.

Look at Kilbernie Rec, how much land they have there, it's proximity to the airport, that it already has good public transport access and has a bunch of different areas you could build a great purpose built venue for Cricket in Wellington. The same stupid statement was made about Carlaw Park "Oh but where will NZ League be based" and I'm sure Athletic Stadium and Carisbrook too.

hmmmm if building impacts the viewlines how would the bypass work?

I don't think the basin needs growth. Wellington isn't growing as a city. The only time the basin fills up is for truly historic games.

Kilbirnie rec is not a bad idea but wind is much more of a problem there than at the basin IMO.

That's the major reason the flyover concept was cancelled, people protested what it would do to their viewlines. The government even took the non-consent ruling made by the council to the high court and still couldn't get it overturned.

It's not in as much of a valley as the basin is which is what exacerbates the wind there, A bit of an embankment and some smart planning on placement could result in a pretty good venue; and you'd easily get funding for it if the trade off was "You no longer have the Basin Reserve roundabout ****ing with your traffic"

Broom's injured, isn't he? I think he would have been in the team otherwise.
I haven't been able to find any statements from Larsen that Broom was overlooked due to injury. I saw one statement that his injury would rule him out for 7-10 days. That period would have run up to last Thursday, so he might have been available (although not ideal). A real shame, as it seemed a good time to debut him ahead of the South African series where NZ will badly need some starch in the middle order.

This is correct, there was no statement suggesting he'd made the Test side if not for the injury.

"The injury will not impact on his availability for the upcoming test series."

Unless it ended up worse than was originally thought, he was just left out for Nicholls it seems.

When watching de Grandhomme's test debut, I reckoned a pretty good bet would be to wager that he never reached 50 test wickets

Odds probably wouldnt be as attractive now but only going to shorten IMO

They've picked Nicholls and Brownlie in the squad. It's not a coincidence that both of them have put up scores against South Africa in the past.

Santner had a reasonable domestic season with the bat in 2014-15 before making the NZ side (scores below), but unfortunately being first choice NZ spinner in white ball cricket is limiting his batting opportunities.

FC, 545 runs @ 32, 1 x 100, 3 x 50s
50 over, 326 runs @ 36, 2 x 50s

For home tests would like to see him bat at #7 in tests (Watling at #6), and have four front line quicks, same role for which he was originally selected.

Don't think the odds would ever have been too attractive
