Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Midwinter

State Captain
Lets have a look at the Sydney pitch this shield season

2 shield games
NSW v WA
NSW spinners OKeefe and Somerville 128 overs, 17/232 out of 20 wickets
WA spinners Agar 50 overs, 10/158 out of 17 wickets

NSW v VIc

NSW spinners - Lyon and O'Keefe - 86 overs 3/286 out of 8 wickets (2 of those in the 2nd innings)
Vic Spinners Holland and Maxwell - 76 overs 4/167 out of 20 wickets

In the first game spinners take 27 of the 37 wickets
In the second game spinners take 7 out of 28 wickets ( NSW only took 8 wickets for the game)

What is the prediction of how the pitch will behave.?

The people who talk of the SCG taking spin this year obviously didn't watch the second game. Wonder what the selectors know that that the public doesn't?

((Agar's figures in the 3 other games, apart from the first game at the SCG, are 6/304))

Look it might sound weird but I reckon the Australian set up might have a bit more of an idea about how the deck will most likely play than we do on here.

the bigger concern is that Lyon/SOK partnership always sucks. dead set, for that victorian game when we had the aus players forced onto us, i wanted Sommerville picked anyway.

Renshaw making it near on impossible to drop him for Marsh in India with this knock.

Near Impossible?

Barring Cartwright looking like a gumby or SOK chipping a nail this is the side that will play the first Test.

I had thought prior to Renshaw's knock here that the selector's might have gone with SMarsh considering his knock against SL in SL recently.

Renshaw might have effectively ended SMarsh's test career with this knock.

I said he needed a big one to guarantee his spot over SMarsh, but that's academic now. I still think SMarsh will be the preferred next in line for a while (and fair enough too). Easy to see him playing a game or two in India, especially if Usman can't change his SC record in the first two tests. After him though you'd expect them to go KPat or younger so Ferg can kiss his Test career good bye no matter what he does from now on I reckon.

Nah, Darsh is definitely in the picture, tbf he'd be in my first XI for an India touring squad.

Seeing this is a test selection thread, the idea is to sort of discuss selection. He could obviously replace "anyone", but I was asking Gnske who he'd drop, specifically, to get Marsh back in.

Most likely Cartwright. Possibly even Khawaja if he can't show improvement against spin.

I'd be very surprised if he (Cartwright) was in the side in India

I think unless they take along another a/r Cartwright's spot is pretty secure. Of course having the selectors panic and bring Maxwell in at 3 at the first sign of buckshot wouldn't surprise at all, but they might just keep their heads and give him the sort of extended chance they gave MMarsh. Never underestimate how desperately Australian selectors want their all rounder to succeed.

I do think they badly want 5 bowling options in India, so I think Cartright'll play, for at least the first test.

Calling Cartwright an all-rounder is very generous

He's a small step above Ponting/Hussey as a bowler
Yeh, but if he can bowl 5-10 economical overs a day in the subcontinent it'd be handy. And a small step above Ponting is a pretty handy bowler fwiw.

What we want ideally is someone who can average 40ish with the bat at #6 and be able to bowl up to ten tidy overs a day.

Cartwright looked assured with the bat today. Think we are making some solid selections with Rod Marsh gone.

Compton

International Debutant
Cartwright's longevity in the side will depend on other players as much as himself.

Right now they're prioritising batting over bowling for their number 6, but if seamers start breaking down and everyone else is scoring runs?

He looked great early on against the quicks, but looked all at sea at times against Yasir and even Azhar Ali. If the leg-spin of Azhar Ali is all over him here how is he going to go against Ashwin and Jadeja on a dustbowl?
