Tbh we've struggled to find openers who would score runs even on flat tracks, so Latham is already a big step up from that. I do think he has what it takes to score runs in all conditions but yeah it's something he'll need to prove. He has scored some fighting half centuries against the best of our domestic attacks in seaming conditions when everyone else was struggling. We'll see if he can do the same at the top level.

Kambli is one of the great what-ifs considering he was never given another extended chance in the test side after his slump... but then with India boasting one of the best ever batting line ups of all time during his timeframe, it's a hard ask to get back in when you give away your position.
If Brownlie was playing he'd have opened and McCullum would've been at five. I can see the argument for that being better than the current lineup.. but the selectors still seem to think Rutherford is a better batsman than Brownlie, in which case the current lineup is definitely the way to go.
That's the exact sentiment from Hesson - he was still considered a middle order option for NZ and would not be considered an opening option until he had some domestic success there.
