World's Best XI The Day You Were Born As Per The ICC Rankings

One of the older members it seems.... I think I can pick the top 6 batsmen and the top four bowlers without any compromises to find a decent mix, though Trevor Goddard will be a bit unfamiliar batting at 8....

Lawry
Simpson
Edrich
Pollock
Kanhai
Sobers
Lindsay *
Goddard
Pollock P
Snow
Gibbs

Guess away.

A second xi likewise needs no rejigging. Batsmen 7-12 and bowlers 5,6,7 and 9 (8 was Sobers) is

Boycott
Hanif Mo.
Saeed Ahmed
Cowdrey
Graveney
Walters
Engineer *
Griffith
Hall
McKenzie
Prasanna

Thank you for pointing me to that website. Love it...

My son's team (Oct 2002) is a hell of a line up:

Hayden (1)
Dravid (5)
Lara (6)
Tendulkar (2)
Inzamam (4)
Ponting (7)
Gilchrist (3)
Pollock (3)
Warne (4)
McGrath (1)
Murali (2)

Strangely short of pace quality with Waqar down at 8 the next highest ranked quick but damn that battling line up would take some knocking over.

Quite rare to have two openers and a keeper in the top 7, as well as a balanced attack in the top four.

Would be if he'd selected two openers.
Dravid opened. Not nearly as often as he batted 3 admittedly, but enough to reasonably take the spot. He opened more than any other position apart from 3 and scored 4 test tons opening.

I will give you that he didn't score any of the tons opening until several years after 2002 though.

Nah, Dravid was not a opener. Just because he did it on a handful of occasions doesn't change that fact.

I thought I would have a go at this and started with the Batting and it looked alright if a little dower
I could get
Turner (3)
Boycott (4)
CA Davis (6)
Redpath (5) he played most of the season before the ratings date at 4
Walters (1)
Sobers (2,7)
Knott (19) wkt great to have one in the top 20 and a legend at that.

Then I got to the bowling WTF I hope we have to play on a dust bowl
In the top 16 bowlers I have 4 left arm slows (3 of the top 4), 5 Right arm offies, 3 Leggies, 2 Right arm quicks, a Left arm quick and Sir Garfield Sobers

1 843 D.L. Underwood ENG
2 758 J.A. Snow ENG
3 713 B.S. Bedi IND
4 698 Pervez Sajjad PAK
5 683 E.A.S. Prasanna IND
6 645 S. Venkataraghavan IND
7 641 G.S. Sobers WI
8 629 B.R. Taylor NZ
9 626 R. Illingworth ENG
10 597 L.R. Gibbs WI
11 561 J.W. Gleeson AUS
12 558 H.J. Howarth NZ
13 547 B.S. Chandrasekhar IND
14 521 A.A. Mallett AUS
15 476 R.O. Collinge NZ
16 442 Intikhab Alam PAK

So if I go Underwood and Snow I don't think I need 3 LA ortho in the team so Bedi and Pervez Sajjad miss out and
Prasanna for the offie at rank 5 and Bruce Taylor at 8 but with any grass on the pitch I have to put Collinge (15) in for Underwood or Prasanna I guess.

Wow 1972 was a struggle

Some team that. Great bowling line up. Can take wicketkeeper of choice with them having the same ranking.

Obviously left out 6,7 and 8th bat to pick an opener of the time.
For me

1. Glenn Turner (3)
2. Keith Fletcher (9)
3. Viv Richards (2)
4. Greg Chappell (1)
5. Alvin Kallicharran (4)
6. Tony Greig (10 batting, 9 bowling)
7. Alan Knott (21) wkt
8. Dennis Lillee (1)
9. Jeff Thomson (2)
10. Derek Underwood (3)
11. Andy Roberts (4)

Gundappa Viswanath (5) unlucky to miss out.

Wonderful batting. Rich variety in spin bowling. Fast bowling probably the weaker suit.

Amazing to think these guys were all in their prime 23 short years ago.

Surely not?!
Well, I am basing his selection on picking the highest ranked spin bowler. If I was to go with the 4 highest ranked bowlers regardless of team balance, then Lawson would be in. But yeah, I was a bit shocked to see him ranked above Qadir.

Yeah I knew he wouldn't actually be in the top four bowlers, but even so the bloke took 11 wickets in 6 Tests at an average of 44. He never took more than three in an innings. I'm at a loss as to how he could've ever been the highest ranked spinner. Are you sure you didn't accidentally have it set on ODIs? He was much better at those.
